ReplyNotice the article says "NO nonstate match is required for this project". The original plan, as proposed by the Foundation, required them to match $$. Slick legislation! Another pork project for Bernardy and Goodwin.

ReplyI think the city needs to back up and make sure it's citizens agree with the SPRING project the Foundation is pushing. In the past the city went to the voter's for approval of a "community center" concept and the voter's said NO. The Foundation has a death grip on a city park---owned by all the taxpayers. This park is not Springbrook Nature Center. The official name of the park is North Park the only thing that is Springbrook is the building. The 2004 vote to have a special tax levy in support of Springbrook was for maintenance and programming within the center, not the entire park. The SPRING program will develop the front five acres of the park and increase the size of the interpretive center to include conference rooms and small shops.
In the last Citizen Survey conducted.it was determined that less than 1% of Fridley residents frequent Springbrook. Why should our state tax dollars be spent on a "quasi country club" for the Foundation and Fridley's elite.
This process should begin with the Fridley voters!
The Council, specifically the Mayor, will tell you,"Somebody is going to get the $$. It might as well be "us".
The Foundation wants closed circuit cameras so you can experience the nature from inside the building while you have coffee or buy a book in the "visitor" center.

ReplyTell me again there's no correlation between high density housing, train depot and crime. Increased home invasions and multiple serious crimes where the alleged suspects are from Fridley!

ReplyThere is an old saying that perfectly addresses the Northstar debacle," It's time to fish or cut bait". In the case of the Northstar it's time to cut bait. For those of you who ride the train the question is simple: If you had to pay the true fare would you still take the train? The current taxpayer subsidy, last time I checked, was $21.00 per ride. Ask yourself: If this were your business would you continue to operate it at that level of loss? For a more visual argument for "derailing" Northstar I offer the link to this chart: http://northstarliberty.blogspot.com/2012/10/infographic-minnesota-transportation.html

ReplySo instead of a ceremony to remember 9/11 the City will feed the Mayor's ego by holding an atta boy. Wish I knew what the actual criteria was. Pretty sure first and foremost was that he was running unopposed. In an election year, IMO, it wouldn't look good if "The League" were endorsing candidates.
As far as the 2007 campaign to remove restrictions from utilities, in the Charter, his "victory" was accomplished by setting a special election 13 days after the General Election. Today, thanks to the Legislature, that would not be allowed! -

Chris your Well Construction Area link doesn't come up. I'd be interested in seeing that. The mayor will tell you we have plenty of water---thus the reason Fridley does not have summer watering bans. The State implemented "conservation" policies to be used by cities in, I think, 2007. The Legislature is currently looking at enforcing the existing language. Cities were to have put conservation rates into effect by a given date and I don't think too many complied. Fridley acted like they knew nothing about it until after the Charter restrictions were lifted by voters in 2007. Rates have skyrocketed since.
