For the past 61 years, the St. Paul Pioneer Press has sponsored a treasure hunt during the time of the city's Winter Carnival celebration. The St. Paul treasure hunt has been a way for locals to break up the winter doldrums and have fun to boot. Not to mention that the potential prize for this year's lucky medallion finder is a cool $10,000. The St. Paul treasure hunt will conclude no later than Jan. 31. It's not, however, the only treasure in the area. Fridley: The annual medallion hunt is a highlight of Fridley's Winterfest on Saturday, Jan. 26, 1–4 p.m. at Commons Park, 6249 Seventh St. NE, Fridley. Mohamed Elkhier won the Fridley Winterfest 2012 Medallion Hunt Saturday after five clues and took home the $100 prize sponsored by Fridley Patch. The 14-year-old found the much-sought medallion in the low juniper bushes at the northeast corner of 61st Avenue NE and Seventh Street NE, in Commons Park.
