Winter's last gasp is mucking up roads and some students' schedules.
The Anoka-Hennepin School District has called a snow day for Friday, according to local media lists, closing schools including Adams Elementary just north of Fridley which draws some Fridley residents. Also closed Friday is Calvin Christian High School in Fridley. Totino-Grace High School in Fridley will start two hours late on Friday, April 20, 2013, according to KARE11.com, as Minnesota deals with a springtime winter storm. Commuters can expect a tough slog through the snow that has fallen along with rain, sleet and hail over the last 24 hours. Overnight, a snowplow truck caught fire and was fully engulfed on East River Road north of Fridley, according to a scanner report. Check back here for updates on any other delayed school starts or…

Snow is expected to be heaviest after 3 p.m. Wednesday. The winter storm warning has been extended until 7 p.m. Thursday.
As forecasters predicted, Twin Cities residents awoke Wednesday to find a dusting of snow and ice on local roads, making for yet another messy springtime commute. Snow fell overnight on top of crusty ice, and it didn’t take long for crashes and spinouts to start. At 4:46 a.m., the Minnesota Department of Transportation kicked off metro crash reports with a crash on Interstate 394, at Interstate 494 and Highway 12 in Minnetonka. Total snowfall was minimal and stopped before morning rush hour began in earnest, but weather will worsen Wednesday afternoon. Snow is likely after 3 p.m., according to the National Weather Service. As much as 10 inches of snow could fall between Wednesday morning and Thursday morning, making for an even-more-…

The National Weather Service in Chanhassen has issued a Winter Storm Watch for the Twin Cities, including Anoka County. More than five inches of new snow could fall on Fridley.
Yet another winter storm, the third in four weeks, is set to make its arrival in the Twin Cities area Sunday night, dropping heavy snow through Monday and bringing some windy conditions to make the morning commute difficult. The National Weather Service in Chanhassen has issued a winter storm watch for this yet-to-be-named system, which is coming across the Rockies Sunday and should drop its heaviest snow overnight Sunday into Monday. The track of the storm is still in doubt, the weather service said, but the metro should, after more than four days of above average temps and some actual snow melt, see a good dose of new precipitation. A complete rundown of the system, and the NWS forecast, can be seen in the YouTube video. Here's the …

The snow may have stopped but it's still creating problems on metro roadways.
The weekend’s storm went down as the third largest December snowfall on record, with anywhere from nine to 16 inches falling in and around the metro area. The snow snarled traffic this morning, with average travel times increased by 15-45 minutes, according to MN DOT and the evening commute wasn’t much better. Plows were able to clear the main arteries making the ride home a little smoother than the morning rush hour, but as of 5p.m. almost all of the highways on MN DOT’s traffic maps show moderate to heavy congestion. Plymouth resident Diane Jones said her evening commute from downtown Minneapolis to Plymouth took an extra 30 minutes. “It was slow going,” she said. “The first storm is always the worst. We all have to remember how to drive…
