Ellison Votes Against Raising Debt Ceiling

The Congressman's vote was also echoed by other Minnesota members of Congress ... on both sides of the aisle.

After a heated and divided campaign season, Republicans and Democrats from Minnesota found some common ground last week. Reps. Michele Bachmann (R) and Keith Ellison (D) both voted against increasing the government's debt ceiling for four months Jan. 23. DFLer Betty McCollum, who represents Minnesota's fourth congressional district, also voted against the measure. "Giving the president four months of unlimited borrowing authority without a cap on spending is something I cannot support," Bachmann reportedly said. According to the Star Tribune, debt deal proposed by House Speaker John Boehner leaves the $16.4 trillion ceiling where it is, but allows continued borrowing to take place until a new May 18 deadline. Despite the bipartisan …

"Hello Visa? Yeah...I ...um...well, I bought this giant new LCD flat screen television and 25 pounds of chicken wings for the Superbowl and well...I'm going to need to borrow another $3 grand over my credit limit, ok? No, really...Keith said it's ok."   more ›

Keith Ellison Won in All but Two of Patch Cities' Precincts

Republican Chris Fields did better in areas Patch covers than in the Fifth District overall.

Patch cities gave U.S. Rep. Keith Ellison (D-MN) one shy of 76,000 votes in the Nov. 6, 2012 election that returned him to Congress for a fourth term. His Republican challenger, Chris Fields, got fewer than half that number of votes from areas Patch covers: 33,623. Only two precincts out of 76 in Patch cities favored Fields over Ellison. Both precincts were in Edina—a new part of the Fifth District, added when redistricting redrew political boundaries based on the 2010 U.S. Census. Edina gave Fields the most support of the six Patch cities in the Fifth Congressional District, with 44.52 percent of Edina's votes going to the Republican. Sixteen precincts in neighboring Southwest Minneapolis gave Fields the least support he enjoyed in Patch'…

Ellison on Election: 'We Won an Argument'

Fifth District voters sent Keith Ellison back to Congress. His Republican challenger, Chris Fields, received 25 percent of the vote.

Use the scroll bar to the right of the photo above to review tweets and photos from the last week via Storify. It was a big week for U.S. Rep. Keith Ellison (D-MN), who reflected on his Nov. 6, 2012 re-election in a post-election YouTube I've never been able to stand for office and get 256,000 votes before. That's a high-water mark for me. Seventy-five percent of the vote: another high-water mark for me. ... But we did something even more important than winning an election. We won an argument. Chris Fields, Ellison's Republican challenger, put it this way in a statement Wednesday: This loss is tough for all of us. I came up woefully short in my campaign to unseat Keith Ellison. ... It is worth noting that last night we received a record …

Ellison Praises Obama in First Presidential Debate

U.S. Rep. Keith Ellison told KARE 11 that President Obama did well in the first debate.

After the first presidential debate on Wednesday, U.S. Rep. Keith Ellison (D-MN) "felt moved" by some of the comments made by President Barack Obama. “I think the president did really well," Ellison told KARE 11. "I didn't hear Romney mention anything about his life. I was thinking that he could have done a little bit better if he would have made it a little more personal in terms of how his policies will affect people.” On Friday, Ellison tweeted: Thanks to President Obama’s leadership, the worst of the economic downturn is behind us. Racial themes continue to prevail in the Fifth District race between Ellison and GOP candidate Chris Fields. Today, an article focusing on race was published in the Star Tribune. The article reports that in …

What does the life of the president have to do with the ability to run the country? If you look at Obama's moral changes in office, that shows a man without convictions. A person that changes his moral standings, right or wrong, is a hypocrite   more ›

Chris Fields Ad: 'Vote for This Black Guy, Not That One'

U.S. Rep. Keith Ellison discussed foreign policy in the Middle East on MSNBC.

The Chris Fields for Congress campaign posted two ads on YouTube Sept. 26, attacking U.S. Rep. Keith Ellison (DFL-MN) with racial themes: Ellison appeared on MSNBC's Andrea Mitchell Reports on Sept. 28 to discuss United States policy in the Middle East: "We really need to show the people of the region know that we’re on the side of human rights and democracy and we're not going to abandon them to extreme elements that would really try to replace a secular dictatorship with a religious one. We need to stay on the side of the people." Fields tweeted about an April 2011 Facebook quiz response by Ellison communications director Matt Roznowski, claiming it showed the Ellison aide had conceded that election fraud was a problem. Roznowski …

Chris, I do hope you read this, you certainly lost my vote with that ad. What are you going to do for CD5 that Ellison is currently not doing should be the focus of your video. I was hoping you would be at least the lesser of two evils. But, you're a lunatic to say the least. I think you both are out of touch; and again, I will skip that section of the ballot, or just write my own name in.   more ›
