Local Food at Fridley's 49er Days Is a Go

A half-dozen local restaurants will have booths.

At least five and possibly six local restaurants will serve food at 49er Days this summer. Taste of the Fridley Area is a new feature, replacing the traditional festival-food vendors of past years. The local restaurants are opting to serve out of booths or tents, not food trucks, according to Sue Johnson at the city's Park and Recreation Department. Here are the participating businesses and what they'll be serving: Johnson said all but Jimmy John's are confirmed. Taste of the Fridley Area will be open Friday, June 24, 5-11 p.m., and Saturday, June 25, 1-11 p.m.

Shootin' Pool at Two Stooges

The Fridley bar draws players on a Friday night with what looks like an acre of pool tables.

Steve Munson and Laura Byrne were among the dozens shooting pool at the Two Stooges bar in Fridley Friday. Byrne said they visit Two Stooges to play some pool about once a month. That's less frequently than "back in the day," she said, when she was there "all the time."

Three Bars Have City's OK To Serve over Christmas

Shortstop, G.B. Leighton's and Two Stooges will stay open over the holiday.

Three Fridley bars will legally serve alcohol over Christmas this year. Two Stooges Sports Bar & Grill, Shortstop Fridley Bar and Grill and G.B. Leighton's Pickle Park sought and received new City of Fridley "holiday endorsements"—permission to sell alcohol for on-premise consumption between 8 p.m. on Christmas Eve and 8 a.m. on Dec. 26. Fridley Ordinance 603.11 prohibits bars from selling intoxicating drinks during that holiday span, but a new provision allows establishments to seek an exemption. Lt. Michael Monsrud said the change means the Fridley Police Department will have five officers on the streets between 7 p.m. Christmas Day and 3 a.m. on Dec. 26. That's the usual number for a regular day, but in past years the department only …
