Poll: How Do You Like Rain in December?

Fridley would be blanketed with nice, fresh snow if it were colder.

As if the cancellation of the first week of broomball at Commons Park on Monday wasn't bad enough, it has been raining in fits and starts for about 24 hours, starting Tuesday evening. Or is that a good thing—because it's not cold?

You need another option--"I have mixed emotions about rain in December and I will tell you why in comments below" That would be my choice. Why? Because as mom-taxi who takes a teen to school for jazz band at 6;30 am, I like not having to scrape snow off windows in the morning. But I'm a Minnesotan through and through...and I like snow. The idea of not having a white Christmas in MN? Scandalous!   more ›

Basilica Wins Vote for Rehab Funds; Fridley Ex-tavern Also in Running

The Minneapolis landmark church was the top vote-getter in Partners in Preservation's Facebook voting.

The Basilica of St. Mary in downtown Minneapolis gained the most votes in a competition for preservation funds, the organization Partners in Preservation announced on Facebook Thursday afternoon. Facebook was also where voting by the public took place. Nearly 28,000 people  voted, according to Partners in Preservation. Within 15 minutes of the announcement about the winner being posted on Facebook, 70 people had "liked" the announcement, while 14 comments expressed mostly disappointment about the winner. The Banfill-Locke Center for the Arts in Fridley, formerly the Banfill Tavern, was one of the 25 sites in the running for as much as $125,000 of $1 million that Partners in Preservation intends to grant to Twin Cities historic sites for …

Don't Like Fridley Weather? Move Your Mouse in Google Street View

Google Street View offers instant climate change just by crossing a street or zooming in.

The saying goes that if you don't like Minnesota's weather, just wait a minute and it'll change. But people who poke around online on Google Street View don't even have to wait that minute. At 73rd and Old Central avenues NE in Fridley, for example, all you have to do is (virtually) cross the street. Using Google Street View, the view looking north on Old Central just south of 73rd is bright and sunny. But move north one click through the intersection and the sky clouds over and the trees lose their leaves on what clearly is a different, late fall day. If you want more change, zoom in on the scene to either side of Old Central and you suddenly get snow. It's an illustration of how Google stitches together pictures that its camera-trucks …

Photos: OccupyMN Draws a Crowd on First Day

The local version of the Occupy Wall Street demonstration started Friday in Minneapolis.

Hundreds of people gathered in downtown Minneapolis Friday for the first day of the OccupyMN demonstration. They came from big cities, suburbs and Greater Minnesota, united in disatisfaction with current economic, and to some extent political, conditions. The crowd in the plaza between Minneapolis City Hall and the Hennepin County Government Center swelled to as many as 1,000 over the noon hour, with placard-carrying protesters mixing with lunching office workers and the merely curious. The main activity of the demonstrators was mingling, strolling and admiring each other's signs. One corner of the plaza was a sign-making workshop; on the other side was a free food stand. OccupyMN is an offshoot of the Occupy Wall Street protests over the …

The ppl who are part of OccupyWallStreet are from various ideals, but they all agree that corporations having too much influence in our Justice/Gov is not a good thing. Many have said the don't disagree with capitalism, just disagree with unchecked power of it.   more ›
