Two Fridley-area elementary school teachers are candidates for 2013 Minnesota Teacher of the Year, the teachers union Education Minnesota announced Thursday: Education Minnesota nominated 135 teachers from across the state for 2013 Teacher of the year, the organization said in a press release. A 25-member panel of community leaders will name semifinalists and finalists in coming weeks, with the Teacher of the Year announced at a ceremony May 5 in Brooklyn Park.

St. Michael-Albertville Middle School West teacher Ryan Canton has reached uncharted territory, becoming one of 10 finalists for Minnesota Teacher of the Year.
Ten teachers from across the state have been named finalists in the 2012 Minnesota Teacher of the Year program. A selection panel of 22 leaders in the areas of education, business, government and non-profits selected the finalists from a group of 34 semifinalists. There were 111 Teacher of the Year candidates for this program year. Included in the Top 10 is St. Michael-Albertville Middle School West social studies teacher Ryan Canton, a 2002 graduate of Totino Grace High School who also serves as the school's adviser for the student council.
