New Springbrook Nature Center Director Has 'Right Combination' of Skills

Mike Maher has 'big shoes to fill' after Siah St. Clair's retirement, but his new and past employers have good things to say about him.

Mike Maher began his new job May 1, 2013 as director of the City of Fridley's Springbrook Nature Center, replacing the retiring Siah St. Clair.  Maher is the right guy for the job, his new boss in Fridley told ABC Newspapers: “I think he had the right combination of being a naturalist and director and administrator,” said Jack Kirk, Fridley’s director of parks and recreation. “We really need somebody who can do both.” ... Said Kirk about the new director, “He certainly has big shoes to fill with Siah’s leaving. But, we think he’ll do really well.” Maher told the Star Tribune a bit about his family ties to the area: “My wife grew up in St. Paul,” Maher said. “We’ve been making the trip across Wisconsin to Minnesota for years. As we’ve …

Nature Center Won't Get State Help for $6.9 million Project This Year

The bill failed by five votes to reach a needed supermajority in the Minnesota House of Representatives Friday. It had included funding for the Fridley nature park.

State Rep. Connie Bernardy (D-Fridley) said in April: “I’m excited to see this project included because the Springbrook Nature Center is such a valuable asset to our community and region. ... The fact that the House felt compelled to fund the project shows how valuable Springbrook is to the region and Minnesota.” The nature center hasn't had an easy time getting money for improvements from state goverment. As governor, Tim …

Our economy still is not booming and I cannot imagine spending 5 million in taxpayers dollars on a "nature center" unless they are still planning on making it into a quasi country club. only the "elitists" who can afford higher taxes like this idea. Springbrook already gets a good share of our tax dollars. People --- get informed on what it cost Fridley taxpayers already, to …   more ›
