The Republican challenger for Minnesota’s 5th District is asking supporters for money to counter Ellison’s comments.
GOP challenger Chris Fields has been quick to try to capitalize on a debate with 5th District Rep. Keith Ellison that devolved to name-calling and personal attacks. In a fundraising e-mail the day after Thursday’s debate, Fields reminded supporters that Ellison called him a “low-life scumbag” and a “gutter dweller.” “Throughout this campaign, Ellison has also referred to me as a ‘liar’ and ‘stupid’, and even went as far as to refer to the entire GOP base as a ‘bigoted party,’” he wrote. “Friends, I urgently need your help to fight back against these abhorrent attacks. Congressman Keith Ellison said he was acting as a father rather than public servant when a debate with Chris Fields took an uncivil turn Thursday.
After a near boxing match between Rep. Keith Ellison and his opponent Chris Fields during a debate on KFAI Radio Thursday morning, Ellison released a statement apologizing for his temper flare: "Today during a radio broadcast debate, my opponent made false statements about an intensely personal family matter. My teenage daughter was present in the next room listening to the debate. "In response to my opponent's false statement, I made an uncivil reference to him. I should not have done so. I acted beneath my personal standard as a public official, and I apologize. "In the course of this campaign, we have been focused on creating economic prosperity for working families, protecting our constitutional right to vote, and making sure that …
