The departing state senator for Spring Lake Park and part of Fridley co-authored a law requiring crossing arms on new school buses that went into effect Jan. 1, 2013.
State Sen. Pam Wolf (R-Spring Lake Park) is leaving the Minnesota Legislature next week, but her legacy is still unfolding: A law she wrote, requiring new school buses to have crossing arms, took effect Tuesday. Wolf, a teacher, introduced the law as a bill in March 2011. After redistricting shifted her district so it no longer included part of Fridley, she lost her re-election bid in the new district to DFLer Alice Johnson. Here is information about Wolf's law and some of the other new laws that took effect Jan. 1, 2013, provided by the nonpartisan House Public Information Services. PUBLIC SAFETY School buses to be equipped with crossing arm All school buses used in the state that are manufactured after Jan. 1, 2013, will need to be …

He pulled over and told a Robbinsdale student to retrieve the weapon from the roadside; Metropolitan Transportation Network owner Tashitaa Tufaa said the driver doesn't work there anymore.
A bus driver who stopped with students on board and asked a child to retrieve what turned out to be a gun is no longer employed with the Fridley-based Metropolitan Transportation Network, said owner Tashitaa Tufaa. Tufaa said the driver, who he wouldn't name, ignored "very huge signs" inside the bus that prohibit any such action. "Even if they see a $20 bill, they cannot pick it up," he said. "They are supposed to call their supervisor immediately." The incident is without precedent at MTA, Tufaa said. A spokesperson at Robbinsdale Area Schools said the same was true for the school. "This has never happened before," spokesperson Tia Clasen told Golden Valley Patch. "I encourage families to talk to their students about situations that may …

Fox 9 report focuses on Sept. collision at Hwy. 65. railroad crossing.
A crash in Fridley last September is the jumping-off point for a new investigation by Fox 9 about collisions in which stopped school buses get rear-ended. The report, titled I Didn't See the Bus, aired Thursday night and starts with a Sept. 7, 2011, crash that Fridley Patch covered that day with photos and a story. In the Fridley incident, the driver of a car smashed into the back of a school bus stopped at railroad tracks crossing Highway 65. The car driver was taken to the hospital but the bus driver was not injured; the bus was not carrying passengers at the time. No children were on bus in crash at the railroad crossing on northbound Hwy. 65 just south of 73rd Avenue NE in Fridley.
No children were on board a school bus involved in a crash with a car on Hwy. 65 Wednesday. An Allina ambulance took the driver of the car to Hennepin County Medical Center, according to Fridley Fire Chief John Berg. The school bus driver was not hurt. The crash happened at about 9:30 a.m. in the right northbound lane of Hwy. 65, at the railroad grade crossing south of 73rd Avenue NE. The car's driver was "up and walking" after the crash, Berg said, but he added that incidents with extensive vehicle damage carry the potential for serious injury. 'It was just ... ram!' The crash appeared to have happened when the bus stopped at the railroad crossing, according to Fridley Police Off. Jason Cardinal. The front end of the car was crumpled …
