She's said to be first Somali-American delegate at the Democratic National Convention, and one of a record number of Muslim delegates at a national political convention.
Among the delegates from Minnesota in Charlotte, NC for the 2012 Democratic National Convention is Hinda Ali of Columbia Heights, who may be the first Somali-American delegate to a major-party national political convention. She is also one of what one organzation reported is the largest number of Muslim delegates at a national party convention. According to the Council on American-Islamic Relations, "recent estimates place the number of Muslim delegates at more than 100, up from 43 Muslim and Arab-American delegates at the 2008 Democratic convention, and 25 at the 2004 convention." Day 1: Aug. 23 It’s Thrifty Thursday at the fair, with adult admission knocked down to $10 and children’s admission to $7. There's a technology theme today with SciMathMN bringing Minnesota STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) hands-on activities from more than 20 organizations. Spring Lake Park competes on Saturday, Aug. 25. An opening ceremony will be held at that the Leinie Lodge Bandshell at 10 a.m. Bonnie Raitt plays at 7:30 p.m. at the grandstand with special guest Mavis Staples.
