Roman Kotas Returns to School

Two months after a car hit his bike, the 13-year-old Fridley boy is back at school.

Roman Kotas returns to school in Fridley Monday for the first time since a car struck the 13-year-old on Mississippi Street NE while he was riding his bike on July 14.  He wrote in his CaringBridge journal Sunday evening: I can't wait to start school tomorrow and to see all of my friends. My mom and dad said that I could write the last Caring Bridge journal entry and it's been great to be able to say thank you to all of my neighbors, friends, family and teachers. He begins the journal enty with a sober assessment of his condition ("I almost died"): I've seen the pictures of my very early days in the hospital and was kind of scared at how damaged I looked. I looked like something out of the SAW franchise. And I am not done yet. I still need…

Roman Kotas' Next Trip Home May Be to Stay

The Fridley boy hurt in a bike-car crash had another weekend visit at home and has a tenative release date of Friday.

The boy injured July 14 when a car struck him while he was riding his bike on Mississippi Street NE could come home from the hospital for good as early as Friday. Roman Kotas spent last weekend at home in Fridley before returning to Gillette Hospital in St. Paul, as described by his father, Wojciech Kotas, in a CaringBridge update: Roman was able to do what he has customarily done so many times—take a walk following his usual neighborhood route (though accompanied rather than on his own). We also ran some errands (inevitably buying more stuff for both kids) and checked out an art festival. As far as we know, September 16 still remains Roman's tentative discharge date from Gillette. I (Dad) will have another conference with his physicians …

Fridley Boy Hit by Car Aims to Come Home Soon

Therapy is going well for Roman Kotas at Gillette Hospital.

Roman Kotas, the boy injured when a car hit his bike on Mississippi Street last summer, could return to his Fridley home from Gillette Hospital as early as this month. That's the word on his CaringBridge website, where his parents keep a journal of his progress. On Wednesday orthopedic surgeons were set to examine his leg and decide whether they could take out the pins and release him Sept. 16. Recently Roman Kotas' family has been able to get passes to take him out of the hospital, first for an Indian buffet—his choice—and then for an overnight stay at home. Some CaringBridge journal excerpts: It's clear that Roman's most long-lasting challenge will be with his eye sight. His vision on the right side cuts off about half way around leaving…

UPDATE: Fridley's Roman Kotas Moves Hospitals After Bike Crash

A month after a car hit his bike, he moved from HCMC to Gillette Children's.

Updated below: Roman Kotas, the Fridley boy who suffered severe head trauma in a bike-car crash on Mississippi Street NE, has moved to Gillette Children's Specialty Healthcare in St. Paul.  The move, from Hennepin County Medical Center where Kotas went immediately after the July 14 accident, came after he showed good progress, according to his parents' journal at CaringBridge: Roman's CAT scan came back looking just great. We were so relieved that there won't have to be any more procedures or delays. And there won't be any more last minute tests that might stand in the way of moving him to Gillete. ... He loves to talk on the phone so today he talked to Grandma and his teacher, Ms. Lee. We also showed him the Caring Bridge site and he was …

UPDATED: Fridley Boy Hurt in Bike Crash Leaves ICU

Roman Kotas is out of intensive care at HCMC.

Updated below: Roman Kotas, the Fridley boy hurt July 14 when a car struck his bike on Mississippi Street NE, was able to move out of the intensive care unit at Hennepin County Medical Center on Monday.  At his CaringBridge website, Kotas' mother Wendy wrote, "It's really wonderful to see how quickly things are progressing." For Roman though, the recovery process isn't all rosy:  The therapists have begun to try to figure out where he's at in terms of his memory and he gets very frustrated when he can't remember things that he knows that he knows. Another frustration, from the day before:  One of the med students was giving him an exam today and asking him to respond to a lot of questions. When she said, "Roman, how do you feel that you …

UPDATED: Fridley Boy Injured in Bike-Car Crash Gives Thumbs Up

Parents report progress as Roman Kotas slowly awakens.

Updated below. The 13-year-old Fridley boy who suffered severe head trauma in a July 14 bike-car crash on Mississippi Street NE is responding to doctors at Hennepin County Medical Center as they take him off of the powerful sedatives that kept him unconscious until this week.  That's the report from Roman Kotas' parents in journal entries at a new Caring Bridge website. From Wednesday's entry:  Today, he spent large amounts of time with his eyes open (OK, let's call it half-opened), quite clearly reacting to our voices and responding to simple commands (e.g., the neurosurgeons asked him to open his eyes; when he did, they asked him to give them a thumbs-up; he kindly obliged). His arms and legs are mobile (and in the right ways), as is his…

UPDATED: Family Holds Out Hope for Fridley Boy Struck by Car While Biking

He has remained unconscious in critical condition after suffering severe head trauma.

Updated below: Roman Kotas, 13, of Fridley, remains in critical condition a week after suffering severe head trauma from being struck by a car while biking on Mississippi Street.  The boy's family is waiting to learn more about his outlook when he awakens, according to his father, Wojciech Kotas.  Doctors have kept the boy unconscious since the accident, using paralyzing drugs to minimize activity in his swollen brain. Earlier, they removed parts of his skull to make way for swelling. They were due to begin taking him off the medicine Wednesday, his father said.  The extent of Roman Kotas' injuries can't be known until he awakens, but Wojciech Kotas said HCMC offers excellent rehabilitation for people with brain injuries. He also praised …
