You Can Volunteer to Measure Fridley Snowfall for National Weather Service

It's March Madness as the CoCoRaHS program seeks local precipitation observers.

How much has it snowed in Fridley? If you join the Community Collaborative Rain, Hail & Snow (CoCoRaHS) Network, it could be you telling the National Weather Service how much snow falls locally, rather than the other way around. CoCoRaHS is a national network of precipitation observers whose measurements of snow, rain and hail help the NWS and other federal weather agencies predict floods and droughts, and take account of the situation when severe weather hits. Because Minnesota already had an existing backyard rain gauge network since the 1970s known as MNGage or HIDEN, Minnesota was one of the last states to join CoCoRaHS, according to Michelle Margraf, meteorologist and Central Minnesota CoCoRaHS cooordinator for the National Weather …

Condition of Fridley Ice Rinks: Not Nice

They're closed until further notice. The January thaw (and rain!) had to hurt.

Sorry, skaters. Poor ice conditions after days of warm midwinter weather and even rain have led the Fridley Parks and Recreation Department to close ice rinks in parks across the city. Here's the bad news posted at the Fridley Recreation Facebook page: Ice rinks are closed until further notice due to poor ice conditions. If everyone stays off the rinks they should be able to open back up relatively soon -- hopefully over the weekend. If people don’t stay off the ice, the ice will be further damaged & rinks will need to remain closed. Related:

Finally, Rain? But How Bad Is Fridley's Drought?

How dry it is where you are, and how much do you need rain?

Here's what the National Weather Service says about Monday in the Twin Cities: Monday will be cloudy, cool, and blustery. A band of rain will move across the region this morning, and a few isolated showers may redevelop later this afternoon. Afternoon highs will only manage the mid 50s to low 60s. Tonight skies will clear out and temperatures will fall into the 30s. Patchy fog is possible in low lying areas. Looking ahead, the cool weather will stick around through the upcoming work week with temperatures expected to be 5 to 10 degrees below the seasonal average for mid-September

So, how dry is Fridley? Can we have small bonfires yet or not? I was hoping this article would answer some of these questions but I cannot find an article here.   more ›

Fridley on YouTube: Friday's Rain

A minute's worth of downpour on a Fridley street, as seen from under a red umbrella.

They say the Twin Cities got more rain in an hour Friday than we had in the previous three weeks combined, and here's a video csolz8732 posted to YouTube to prove it.

Watching Fridley's Weekend Weather: Thunderstorms, Hail, Snow?

Rain almost certain, hail possible through Sunday night, when snow may also fall.

Your beautiful Saturday is likely to turn noisy and wet overnight, as a Midwestern storm system delivers thunder and rain to Fridley and across much of central and southern Minnesota. That's according to a hazardous weather outlook from the National Weather Service, which also raises the possibility of hail overnight Saturday and snow overnight Sunday. That's nothing compared to the tornadic activity in states further south such as Iowa, Oklahoma, Kansas and Nebraska. The weekend's rainfall may amount to an inch to an inch-and-a-half, and from Sunday through Friday "the system will bring plentiful amounts of rain," the NWS predicted Saturday evening. If you take out a camera, videocam or camera phone this weekend, take some pictures of …

POLL: Winter Storm Warning for Fridley—Big Deal or Nothing Much?

Flakes are falling but will the storm fizzle in Fridley?

The National Weather Service issued a Winter Storm Warning for Fridley, Anoka County and other parts of the Twin Cities metropolitan area from 3 p.m. Tuesday afternoon through 6 p.m. Wednesday: Snow and sleet and even a little freezing rain are likely from early tonight through Wednesday afternoon. The mix will change to all snow by Wednesday morning.  Sustained winds of 15 to 25 mph may occur in addition to the falling snow and produce low visibilities at times.  Snow, sleet and strong winds will cause problems for travelers. And the wet snow could cause a few tree branches to break leading to power outages. Snow and sleet will cause slick road conditions ...  What does a Winter Storm Warning mean anyway?  A Winter Storm Warning means …

Poll: How Do You Like Rain in December?

Fridley would be blanketed with nice, fresh snow if it were colder.

As if the cancellation of the first week of broomball at Commons Park on Monday wasn't bad enough, it has been raining in fits and starts for about 24 hours, starting Tuesday evening. Or is that a good thing—because it's not cold?

You need another option--"I have mixed emotions about rain in December and I will tell you why in comments below" That would be my choice. Why? Because as mom-taxi who takes a teen to school for jazz band at 6;30 am, I like not having to scrape snow off windows in the morning. But I'm a Minnesotan through and through...and I like snow. The idea of not having a white Christmas in MN? Scandalous!   more ›
