Is that better or worse?
Another sewer-pipe failure sent raw sewage into the Mississippi River Wednesday—this time not in Fridley but about 60 miles upriver in Sauk Rapids. As with a regional sewer-pipe leak from the bank of the Mississippi in Fridley on June 20, authorities are saying that the dilution rate in the fast-flowing river is reducing risk to people. It "shouldn’t be a danger,” Sauk Rapids Mayor Mayor Dave Saunders told the St. Cloud Times. The Metropolitan Council Environmental Services department put up signs at Fridley boat launches and other public river access points after its pipe burst just south of the Lockslea Girl Scouts camp on East River Road last month. MN Pollution Control Agency expects ozone levels to peak Monday afternoon.
If the recent heat wave isn't enough to deter you from outdoor activity, the quality of the air expected Monday afternoon just might. The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency (MPCA) has issued another air pollution health advisory for Monday, July 2, 2012. Officials expect ozone pollution for the Twin Cities metro and southeastern Minnesota to increase. The health advisory runs until midnight Monday. The advisory indicates that ozone levels are expected to be near a level that is considered unhealthy for sensitive groups, including those with preexisting respiratory conditions, the elderly, children, and individuals who participate in outdoor activities requiring extended or heavy exertion. The MPCA issued two similar advisories last week. …

Increased cloud coverage is expected to slow the production of ozone pollution.
The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency (MPCA) has cancelled the air pollution health advisory issued for the Twin Cities metropolitan area and Rochester for Friday, June 29. A storm system developing in the Dakotas is promoting cloud formation across Minnesota today. The increased cloud coverage is expected to slow the production of ozone pollution. As a result, the Air Quality Index (AQI) is expected to be in the mid-moderate AQI range today, which is below the threshold for an air quality alert. Through the weekend, forecasted high temperatures and the presence of wildfire smoke in the region will continue to enhance the creation of ozone. Over the next six days the AQI forecast is: Friday–77, Saturday –84, Sunday –87, Monday –84, …

The Minnesota Department of Health collected on Monday an “investigative sample” of Fridley’s drinking water, which will be tested for contaminants. The unscheduled test came in response to concerns raised by the Fridley Cancer Cluster Facebook group, which now has more than 2,000 members and has attracted the attention of consumer advocate Erin Brockovich. The testing was undertaken at the request of the city of Fridley, said James Kosluchar, the city's public works director. A regularly scheduled annual test for volatile organic compounds (VOCs) was already scheduled Monday for Fridley's post-treatment water supply. Kosluchar said the city decided to collect an additional "grab sample" from raw, untreated water in Well No. 9, one of the …

Consumer advocate Erin Brockovich's environmental investigator had been looking into Fridley’s elevated cancer rates for only about 24 hours as of early Friday afternoon. But already Bob Bowcock said he had identified several underground “contamination plumes”—the result of pollutants released decades ago by industrial companies, spreading below the streets of Fridley. 'Underground Fog' “There are chemical plumes migrating like clouds of fog underground," Bowcock said. "They are moving and they are subject to weather conditions. They’re dynamic, they change, they offgas—that I’ve already verified.” In the coming weeks, Bowcock plans to sort through public record—the history of the superfund sites, the quantity of the chemicals, the length…

Jason McCarty—the man behind the "Fridley Cancer Cluster" Facebook group that impressed environmental activist Erin Brockovich—moved to Fridley as a toddler, and spent his childhood in a home near East River Road and Mississippi Street NE. “As kids, me and all my buddies would tube down [Rice Creek] from Old Central [Avenue] to Locke Lake, and we’d find 80-gallon drums, down there in the mud, who knows what they were,” he said. “I used to go fishing down in Rice Creek and the Mississippi in the ‘70s and find deformed carp with two tails, multiple fins.” Now 42, McCarty is the organizer of the Fridley Cancer Cluster Facebook group and is convinced of a link between the heavy industry, pollution and Superfund sites that surrounded his …

I have lived in Fridley for almost 40 years and have had cancer. I now have some peripheral neuropathy. If our drinking water is exceeding the acceptable contaminant level it should be cleaned up. Does a water filter in my home help in removing the contaminants?   more ›
