Ducks made way for Fridley firefighters.

Tim Simonson shared his photo on the Fridley Patch Facebook page: "The Fridley Fire Department was conducting some ice rescue training on East Moore Lake today. All of the ducks had to move out of their open water space for a while." Update: Fridley Fire Chief John Berg explained in an email Monday: Fridley conducted training for recruit firefighters on ice rescue and will be running scenario based training for everyone tonight and tomorrow morning.

FOUND: Tikka the Lost Chocolate Lab Is Home Again

Owner's Patch announcement prompted neighbor's tweet and a call to Fridley police, who had taken the dog to Brighton Veterinary Hospital.

Tikka is home. The much-loved pet went missing near Moore Lake Tuesday. Patch user Donna O., whose son recently became Tikka's owner, posted a Lost Dog announcement at Fridley Patch at 6:15 p.m:  My son's chocolate lab escaped her fence near Moore Lake beach. Moore Lake Fine for Swimming; Water Quality Drops over Summer

City of Fridley Parks and Recreation Department closes the beach in mid-August.

A July 5 Fridley Patch post about swimming at Moore Lake ("Fridley Folks Hit Moore Lake Beach in the Heat—Briefly") drew 16 comments at the Fridley Patch Facebook page—many of them questioning the quality of the lake's water.  How is the lake's water quality? Mark Daly takes water samples in Moore Lake for the City of Fridley Parks and Recreation Department every two weeks. He provided the test data in the table below. "When the e-coli numbers get over 200 [organisms per 100 milliliters] we look at retesting the water," Daly said by email Monday, "and if they come back high again we close the beach until we get acceptable readings." Fridley Folks Hit Moore Lake Beach in the Heat—Briefly

The Fourth of July was busy at the beach, but temps around 100 degrees keep people away too.

People have been showing up at Moore Lake Beach to cool off during the current record-setting heat wave. But it may be too hot for some, said Alicia Ward, who supervises the beach building for the City of Fridley Parks and Recreation Department. Less than a dozen people were on the sand or in the water at about 1:30 p.m. Thursday. An exception was the Fourth of July, which Ward said was "pretty busy." Most people have been staying less than an hour in recent days, according to Ward. "A lot of families come with little kids," she said. "They're not going to want to stay out in 100 degrees." California Company Maps Fridley in Watercolors

A design firm gives the city of Fridley a watercolor overlay.

The thin-ice markers are a 10-year-old innovation.

What are the buoys floating in Moore Lake for? Dave Lindquist, Fridley parks division supervisor, explained in an email: The buoys in Moore Lake have thin ice signs mounted on them and are delineating the area where the lake ice typically remains open because of the aeration system that is used to add oxygen to the lake water to help with water quality. The buoys freeze in place and are a warning to people who might venture out onto the winter ice that there is open water. We came up with the idea of the floats about 10 years ago. It’s a much safer way of putting out the thin ice signs. Editors' note: The leaves haven't jumped back on the trees. These photos were taken a few weeks ago.

Freshwater Society Contest Calls for Conservation Creativity

Fridley has lakes, creeks and a big river. A contest seeks good ideas on how to keep them clean.

Do you want to reduce urban runoff and pollution that flows into local lakes, creeks and rivers? Do you have a good idea for how you and your friends and neighbors could work together to clean up soil, grass clippings and leaves from streets and storm drains? And could you use $500? Then here is a contest for you. The Freshwater Society is sponsoring a Work For Water micro challenge that will award two $500 prizes for the best short-term community projects that protect waters from pollution caused by leaves, grass and soil that wash into streets and, eventually, local waterways. The contest opened Sept. 20, and entries will be accepted until Oct. 11. The winner will be announced Oct. 18. The project must be completed by Nov. 12. Learn more…

Photos: Hot Enough for a Dip at Moore Lake

It still felt like summer in Fridley on Monday.

Labor Day has come and gone but summer seems to be sticking around, for one last day anyway. Four cousins took advantage of the heat Monday and went for one last dip in Fridley's Moore Lake.
