Incident occurred at 73rd and University avenues NE shortly after 10 a.m. Monday.

Updated below. A snowplow and passenger vehicle collided at University and 73rd avenues NE in Fridley Monday shortly after 10 a.m. An ambulance was sent to the scene on a routine basis, Fridley Police Lt. Mike Monsrud said, indicating that injuries, if any, were very minor. He said he didn't know who, if anyone, was injured. The Minnesota State Patrol was headed to the crash site to write up the incident, Monsrud said, as is routine for crashes involving plows on state highways. Thanks to Fridley resident Laurie Buck for the photos from the scene. Monsrud said that Monday morning was proving to be busier for the Fridley Police Department than usual for a day with snowy road conditions, with cars sliding off the road and other incidents. …

No Arrest in Death of Fridley Trucker on I-35W

Driver of car that struck him was distracted, state patrol's preliminary investigation indicates.

It was a distracted driver whose car struck and killed Hamed E. Nahi Alsaady of Fridley on I-35W Friday, according to preliminary indications of a Minnesota State Patrol investigation. The state patrol report Friday said Alsaady was outside his semi trailer truck checking a blown tire on the shoulder of southbound I-35W in Richfield Friday evening when a car drifted right, hitting him and his truck. Lt. Eric Roeske of the state patrol confirmed that by email Sunday, adding:   The driver was not arrested at the scene. Once the investigation is complete the case will be forwarded to the county attorney to review for any possible felony charges, if no felony charges are filed it will be sent to the city attorney to review for misdemeanor or …

Troopers' Peril Hits Close to Home

With 31 State Patrol officers hit along highways this winter—two of them near Fridley—officials are reminding drivers to slow down.

It's been a bad week and a bad winter for State Patrol officers getting hit along highways in Minnesota—including near Fridley. On Tuesday Trooper Tim Peterson suffered injuries to his face when his squad car got hit while he was arresting a drunk driver on I-694 at Silver Lake Road. Peterson was one of eight troopers hit since Sunday. And exactly one month earlier, Roeske said, on Jan. 22, another trooper sustained minor injuries when he was hit on I-694 just slightly further east, at Long Lake Road. Since Nov. 1, 31 state troopers have been hit on Minnesota roads. They are accustomed to working next to high-speed traffic, said Lt. Eric Roeske, a State Patrol spokesman—but "every now and then we have a week like this one." Roeske said key…

Slideshow: Fridley Stays on the Go in the Snow

A photographic stock-taking of snow-moving and moving in snow, at what feels like midwinter.

We're used to it now. As Monday turned to Tuesday, more snow came, quickly slickening roads. A semi ran into a snowbank on the westbound entrance to I-694 from East River Road, leaking diesel that took MnDOT half the night to mop up, according to State Patrol Lt. Eric Roeske. Fridley police responded to six accidents Tuesday that caused damage but no injuries "That’s quite a few!" said Lt. Mike Monsrud by email. Wednesday could bring more of the white stuff that Fridley Public Works Streets Supervisor Jeff Jensen said has cost the city as much as $31,000 to plow when it falls on a weekend, requiring overtime pay. That keeps Fridley moving, whether on foot or rails, two wheels or more.
