Local Republicans readying for Paul's appearance Friday.
See updates below. Ron Paul is set to speak at the Minnesota Republican convention Friday, and party activists in the Fifth District are preparing for a possible Paul win—with one local activist saying "I get the feeling I'm witnessing history." Paul is poised to make a strong showing in Minnesota after congressional-district conventions gave him 20 of 24 available national delegates. The Texas congressman was denied a speaking slot at the 2008 state convention, but has proven a popular candidate and speaker here since—turning fans away, for example, from an over-capacity speech in Arden Hills shortly before Minnesota's 2012 caucus night. On Monday, Paul announced his campaign would stop spending money in states that haven't yet held …

State: Overall rate 7.6, not 10, percent; high lung cancer rate likely due to smoking.
UPDATED BELOW The Minnesota Department of Health has re-computed the rate of cancer in Fridley for the years 2000–2009, and in a news release said the city's rate was 7.6 percent, not 10 percent as the department said last month. See also separate post with more new data released Monday: "Health Dept. Releases 1990s Fridley Cancer Data" The adjustment came with a correction to statewide cancer rates, according to the news release. Higher overall state rates meant Fridley's figures weren't as far out of line. The new rate puts Fridley's incidence of cancer in a range that's "not unusual," according to MDH cancer epidemiologist John Soler: It’s not unusual to find communities that have a rate of cancer five to 10 percent above expected and …

The congressman met with business leaders Thursday to discuss how to boost exports.
With new cities rising from the sands of Saudi Arabia, the country is a ripe market for Minnesota companies looking to export their products, Rep. Keith Ellison told a group of business leaders from around the state Thursday. “I can assure you this is a market where they want American products,” he said. The 5th District congressman visited Golden Valley insecticide manufacturer McLaughlin Gormley King for an export and manufacturing roundtable where he fielded questions about exports and discussed his experience on trade missions, including one he took to Saudi Arabia earlier this month. “If you have soft demand in the state, there are people abroad who want what you make,” he said. Ellison argued that America can maintain a manufacturing…

Put outdoor furniture where it won't blow, the National Weather Service says.
A wind advisory has been posted for Fridley and the Twin Cities for Tuesday, 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., according to the National Weather Service–Twin Cities. The wind will come with a cold front sweeping into the area Tuesday morning. Southwest winds could blow from 30-40 miles per hour with gusts to 50 mph. Objects left outside, such as trash cans and lawn furniture, could be blown around. Be cautious as driving could be hazardous, especially for those in high profile vehicles, the National Weather Service said. Could be interesting driving on Highway 65 over Moore Lake, between West Moore Lake Park and Moore Lake Park and Beach on the east side. Wind advisories are posted when winds of 35 mph or more are expected. There's also a slight chance …

The state representative's opinion article asks for more attention to renewables.
State Rep. Kate Knuth (DFL-50B), who represents the southeast corner of Fridley, wrote a commentary article about Minnesota's energy policy that appeared in Thursday's edition of the Star Tribune: Like many Minnesotans, I took advantage of last week's warm weather to get outside. But I couldn't shake the feeling that 80 degrees and humid in March is just plain weird. I also spent hours in legislative hearing rooms, working to meet committee deadlines. The two experiences dramatize the misplaced priorities and inadequate leadership of the legislative majority on climate and clean energy, issues that should be a cornerstone for Minnesota's success in a 21st-century economy. Fortunately, the bonding bill provides an opportunity for a …

Knuth: Amendment treats private, public college students differently.
Update (2:30 a.m. Wednesday): The Minnesota House of Representatives passed a bill early Wednesday to put a Constitutional amendment on the ballot next November requiring voters to show photo ID when they vote. The vote, like most others Tuesday on proposed changes to the bill, was along party lines, 72-62. The Minnesota Senate Rules Committee takes up the bill Wednesday. If approved by the Legislature, voters will decide by referendum at next fall's general election whether to change the state Constitution. Another referendum banning same-sex marriage is already set to appear on the ballot. Update (8 p.m. Tuesday): State Rep. Kate Knuth (DFL-50B), who represents the southeast corner of Fridley, spoke Tuesday evening on the floor of the …

Two students scientists from Al-Amal School in Fridley were among more than 500 students at the 75th Annual Minnesota State Science & Engineering Fair last weekend. Ayub Ali, a seventh grader, got the idea for an experiment on regenerating body parts while talking to his father, who lost a toe after being shot as a soldier in Somalia, according to an article by Sheila Regan at the Twin Cities Daily Planet. Ali and partner Adam Adan tested how aspartame and caffeine affect planaria, a kind of flatworm that can regenerate lost body parts. Ali told Regan caffeine did not spur faster regeneration, as the team had predicted. Rather, the worms appeared to have overdosed on it. Al-Amal held an all-school science fair for its middle- and high-…

Doesn't make any sense to call Ron Paul the underdog when he's already won more delegates than Romney in 10 states including Romney's home state! It's Romney who's the underdog at the conventions - it's only the media and the GOP establishment who keep saying Romney's the winner!   more ›
