Fridley Resident and Slutwalk Organizer Addresses Penn State 'Fiasco'

Kimberia Sherva wrote an open letter to the young men involved.

Kimberia Sherva is the Fridley resident who was an organizer of SlutWalk Minneapolis, a march against sexual violence and in support of the victims of sexual violence.   As a survivor of rape/molestation she felt the need to reach out to the young men involved in the Penn State fiasco. The following is from the SlutWalk Minneapolis blog. One word has been changed so as not to offend sensibilities. The original can be found here. I know I’m going to cry as I write this but that’s OK.  There have been plenty of reactions to the whole Penn State fiasco. Fridley Woman Looking Toward What's Next for SlutWalk Minneapolis

Kimberia Sherva brought the international movement against sexual violence to Minnesota.

Fridley resident Kimberia Sherva brought a new awareness about sexual violence to Minnesota when she organized the state's first SlutWalk earlier this month. And the hundreds who turned out for the Oct. 1 march and rally in Minneapolis gained a voice and new vehicle for organizing: SlutWalk Minneapolis. “While the word ‘slut’ in SlutWalk Minneapolis was a very polarizing word, it raised awareness," Sherva said. “Our message was simple: no one wants to be raped. No one. Our motto wasn’t ‘Don’t get raped’ it was ‘DON’T RAPE.' Fridley Resident Organizes Slutwalk to Give Rape Survivors a Voice

Costumed walkers in the Oct. 1, 2011, SlutWalk in Minneapolis will have a much different message: Rape is Rape and No Means No and that the "rape culture" we live in needs to change.
