Where Is the Fake-Nose Bandit?

The FBI wants tips on a bank-robbery suspect last seen in August who hit grocery-store banks in Plymouth, Maple Grove, St. Louis Park, Fridley and New Brighton.

Who wears a phony nose, robs banks and hasn't been seen in three months? That's what the FBI would like to know. The agency has renewed its appeal for information from the public on a man they believe robbed six banks from March to August. All six banks were inside grocery stores—in New Brighton, Plymouth, Maple Grove, Fridley and St. Louis Park (twice). The suspect has a distinctive disguise—a fake nose—and often a formal manner of dress, with hat, French cuffs and suit coat. "It's not a bad disguise. Clearly he's taken some time," said FBI spokesperson Kyle Loven. "I don't know if he's fooling people. I think a lot of people have waked by this guy in the grocery store." The FBI waited until after election hoopla was out of the news to …

Photos: Inside the New Aldi Grocery Just Outside Fridley

A crowd showed up for a peek inside the Columbia Heights store.

Friday is the first day of business for the new Aldi grocery at 50th and Central avenues NE in Columbia Heights, a block or so south of Fridley. On Thursday, the public got a look at the store during a well-attended midday open house. Earlier, Vice President Gordon Nesbit spoke about the new store in an interview. Nesbit leads the chain's division in Minnesota, where the Columbia Heights store is the 29th. The area around the new store "underserved from Aldi right now," he said. But isn't the area already well-served by existing grocery stores? "Our shoppers are usually two-store shoppers. For us to be located near our competitors makes it convenient for our customers," Nesbit said, adding: "The American consumer is convenience-driven." …

Fridley Grocers Discuss Discount Shopping Model

Aldi's new store spurs talk of how discount retailing affects business.

At Aldi, the discount grocery store that just opened a new location on 50th and Central avenues NE in Columbia Heights, customers buy their bags, check out carts on loan, and pay for their groceries without the convenience of credit cards or checks. Aldi’s business model keeps prices low, and it's catching the attention of local grocery stores. Mike Schroer, an owner of Bob’s Produce Ranch, said he does not see Aldi as a direct competitor. “We’re not a low-cost store,” he said. “We go to their store quite frequently, and we’re astonished that they can sell that product. ‘You sell that? It doesn’t look very good.’ We’re at the opposite end of the spectrum--premium quality, good service.” He said that the new Aldi store, three miles from Bob…

Chris, food IS interesting. But I'd not mad about the price of the soup for me, because I wouldn't pay that. It's the grandma on a fixed income that goes into Bob's for the camaraderie of the hometown store and pays that price because they don't have the mobility to go shopping at more than one as I do. But in my case, saving that $1 on canned goods lets me occasionally spend $40 at a so-so …   more ›

Aldi Grocery Set to Open Friday Just South of Fridley

New Columbia Heights store to hold open house on Thursday.

A new Aldi grocery store will open its doors for business Friday two blocks south of Fridley at 50th and Central avenues NE in Columbia Heights. On Thursday Aldi will hold a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 11 a.m. and an open house from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. The Aldi store's regular hours starting Friday will be 9 a.m.-8 p.m. Monday-Saturday and 10 a.m.-6 p.m. on Sunday. Construction at 5025 Central Ave. NE on the former site of Cafe Donuts and Crosstown Eatery began last May after the Columbia Heights City Council approved a plan for a 17,886-square foot store. To accommodate increased traffic, Columbia Heights created a right-turn lane from 50th Avenue onto northbound Central Avenue NE. Aldi offers its own brands of grocery items at discounted …

Aldi Grocery Store Coming to Columbia Heights

Crews tore down Cafe Donuts and Crosstown Eatery Wednesday.

Construction crews tore down Cafe Donuts and the vacant building that used to be Crosstown Eatery in Columbia Heights Wednesday to make room for a new Aldi grocery store at 50th and Central avenues NE (see artist's rendering). "The city of Columbia Heights has worked really hard on their economic development, and this will be one more nice addition for them," said Fridley's Community Development Director Scott Hickok. "What's good for Columbia Heights is good for Fridley as well." Last month, the Columbia Heights City Council approved the plan for a 17,886-square foot Aldi grocery store. Aldi anticipates a six-month construction period with a grand opening before Thanksgiving, according to Jeff Sargent, Columbia Heights city planner. "Aldi…

Wish we could get a store in Manning, SC. We drive to Sumter (43 miles each way) so we don't go that often. Never had a problem with anything I ever bought. FS   more ›
