Freed Construction Worker 'Lucky to Be Alive' After two hours of complex work, crews with more than a dozen local agencies successfully freed a young construction worker from beneath a massive concrete slab in Edina's Rolling Green neighborhood. Fire Chief Marty Scheerer said the young man was "doing extremely well" throughout the lengthy rescue, but noted he was "lucky to be alive" given the circumstances. What the hardest-hit areas of Golden Valley look like one year after the May 22, 2011 tornado.
May 22 marks the one-year anniversary of a tornado that swept through several cities, including St. Louis Park, Minneapolis, Fridley and Golden Valley. Golden Valley Patch revisited the damaged areas in Golden Valley and compiled a photo gallery to look at the improvements made in one year. The congressman met homeowners the day after the storm.
U.S. Rep. Keith Ellison (DFL-Fifth District) toured Fridley for more than an hour Monday, the day after a tornado ripped across the city. Mayor Scott Lund accompanied Ellison, who stopped to talk to homeowners and vowed to make sure the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) fairly tallies the damage.
