The campaign was launched in 2008 as a protest against the passage of Proposition 8 in California, which amended the state Constitution to ban same-sex marriage.
On Nov. 14, Congressman Keith Ellison used Facebook to announce that he's in support of the NOH8 campaign, a protest created by celebrity photographer Adam Bouska and his partner, Jeff Parshley, after Proposition 8 was passed in California. California voters passed Proposition 8 in 2008 which amended the state's Constitution to ban same-sex marriage. According to the NOH8 website, Bouska and Parshley have taken photos of more than 30,000 people wearing tape across their lips which symbolizes "their voices being silenced by Prop 8." On Facebook, Ellison wrote: Proud to join the NO H8 Campaign to stand for liberty and justice for ALL Americans. Ellison joined other celebrities, children and military officers who have also publically …

Rep. Keith Ellison and Republican challenger Chris Fields actually agree on a few issues from the past week, disapproving of the National Defense Authorization Act and calling for an end to violence in north Minneapolis.
Rep. Keith Ellison and one of the Republican candidates in the Fifth District's November election tend to disagree on many issues—from deregulation of businesses to the effectiveness of social programs. But this past week, they've been in agreement on a couple issues. However, they strongly disagree about the controversial appointment of Richard Cordray. The National Defense Authorization Act On New Year's Eve Day, President Obama signed the National Defense Authorization Act, expanding the power and scope of the U.S. government to fight the "War on Terror." However, the president said he had reservations about key parts of the law. ABC News reports that this includes "a controversial component that would allow the military to indefinitely…

Torgerson, Katch and Fields disagree on a balanced budget amendment and the Patriot Act, among other things.
In front of an audience of about 30 people Monday night at the Hennepin County Library in Crystal, the three candidates seeking the Republican Party’s endorsement to run against Rep. Keith Ellison in Minnesota’s Fifth Congressional District, debated a wide range of issues. While all three—Lynne Torgerson, Michael Katch and Chris Fields—agreed on most issues, there were a few where they differed. All favor a balanced federal budget but none was particularly enthusiastic about a balanced budget amendment to the U.S. Constitution. “An amendment calling for a balanced budget would be too restrictive,” said Katch. “There are times where the federal government needs to borrow money as has been the case in the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.” …

Chris Fields is accusing Rep. Keith Ellison of not doing enough for urban minorities.
When was the last time you heard a Republican accuse a Democrat of shafting the poor and minorities? Meet Chris Fields, a former U.S. Marine major seeking the GOP nod to face Rep. Keith Ellison in the 2012 election. Fields points to Ellison co-chairing the Progressive Caucus in the U.S. House of Representatives as one of his failings. “There are 105 members in the caucus, and they've been largely absent when it comes to fixing issues for large blocs of folks who haven't been traditionally served very well,” Fields said. It’s a marked change from other opponents who see Ellison’s Muslim faith—contrasting their own Christianity—as the main reason voters should pick them. Lynne Torgerson, who ran against Ellison in 2008 with a campaign that …

The Republican made his candidacy official Tuesday.
Though his name was out there a few months ago, Republican Chris Fields made it official on Tuesday—he's running against incumbent Keith Ellison in Minnesota's Fifth Congressional District in 2012. Fields joins Lynne Torgerson as a Republican challenger to Ellison, a Democrat. It will be an uphill battle for both challengers in the generally liberal district—Ellison won with 68 percent of the vote in 2010, and with 71 percent of the vote in 2008. Fields, a former Marine from New York City who lives in Minneapolis, said in a statement that he doesn't think Ellison has been an effective leader during his three terms in Congress. Fields added that his own inner-city upbringing, as well as his time in the Marines, taught him about perseverance…
