IMAGE: Fridley 49er Days Button for 2013

Three local icons featured: Springbrook Nature Center, Banfill-Locke Center for the Arts and the Northstar train.

Here is the new button design for the 2013 Fridley 49er Days festival, unveiled at about 8 a.m. Monday at the Fridley 49er Days Committee's Facebook page. In January, the committee dropped some hints on their Facebook page about this year's festival: It appears that there may be some changes coming this year. The parade will be June 27th -- a week later than normal, and once again the location will be different in 2013. We hope to bring in a carnival and again have Chris Brookes and his band perform. Details will be updated as they are finalized. We're working on the classics you've come to love, bringing back some past favorites, and adding some NEW events that is sure to create a HUGE buzz! Fridley Council OKs Beer and Wine at 49er Days

Several council members questioned whether the change in city code opened the door to alcohol at other events.

The Fridley City Council approved changes to the city code Monday that would allow the sale of strong beer and wine at community festivals at Commons Park and Community Park.  The one community festival set to benefit from the council's action is 49er Days. The council considered explicitly limiting the change to 49er Days but in the end approved a more general definition: "Community festivals shall include Fridley 49er Days and other festivals of broad community appeal and participation as designated by City Council." Council Member Ann Bolkcom wonder whether the change would let the city deny a permit to "20 to 30 people who want to have a party."
