Parents Talk: I'll Be Your Taxi Driver for the Next 16 or 18 Years

Are you going to fire me as your chauffeur—please?

You probably saw the news from the United States Department of Agriculture that middle class families with a child born in 2011 can expect to spend $234,900 over the next 17 years. You may not have heard that $200,000 of that goes for gasoline. They don't tell you when you have kids that you're starting your own taxi service. High schoolers take home baby dolls that cry every 20 minutes to simulate the travails of parenthood. But unless they take home two or more dolls that demand to be driven to opposite ends of the metro area simultaneously, they really have no idea what they're in for.  On Wednesday, my 15-year-old fired me as taxi driver. The day before, I'd chauffered him and three of his friends, ironically enough, to driver's ed …

Right on Cedar Phillips, your last two comments make more sense than the first one. Years ago when I was in this situation, there was no bus service available and distance was a problem. I drove my kids to and from because I didn't want them to miss the opportunity to do things like sports, library, swimming etc. It was a hassle at times but the rewards were worth it.   more ›

PHOTOS: 694 Traffic Crawls Past Crash Site near Matterhorn Drive in Fridley

It was one of 20 crashes in Fridley before 3 p.m. on a snowy Friday.

Fridley streets and the city's stretch of I-694 had their share of spinouts and crashes on Minnesota roads Friday, as fresh snow and ice made road surfaces slippery and braking iffy.  One incident took place on eastbound I-694 just west of the Matterhorn Drive NE bridge, where a vehicle with front-end damage was on the shoulder, facing traffic. According to Anoka County emergency radio, one vehicle involved in a property-damage crash at that location left the scene; a Fridley police officer had pulled it over on the highway a few minutes later. Twenty Fridley Crashes Fridley Police Lt. Mike Monsrud gave this report by email at 3 p.m.: We have responded to about 20 crashes so far today. I don’t have an exact number at this time as some …

Police to Increase DWI Enforcement During Thanksgiving Holiday

Heightened Enforcement Focus in Fridley with Anoka County DUI Task Force

While the majority of Minnesotans are having visions of turkey, football, shopping, and what to be thankful for during this extended weekend, the Minnesota Department of Public Safety's Office of Traffic Safety is having nightmares about the fact that this weekend is historically the year's deadliest holiday travel period. Fridley and its surrounding areas are partnering with the MPS with extra presence on the roads to identify those too impaired to drive. Don Abbott, Fridley's Director of Public Safety, talked to the Patch this afternoon about the weekends plans: "This evening and through the weekend, Anoka County has a DUI Task Force that will be running saturation patrols with 10-20 additional officers patrolling the Southern end of …

Self-taught Driver Doing Donuts: Fridley Police Blotter

A circling car seemed suspicious.

Someone reported a suspicious male in a vehicle circling a parking lot in the 5700 block of East River Road on April 3. Police found he was a resident of the apartment complex who had arrived from India three days earlier and was teaching himself to drive. Here are other items selected from information provided by the Fridley Police Department: April 2: April 3: April 4: In all incidents where an arrest occurred, a charge is merely an accusation, and not evidence of guilt. The arrested person is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. Incidents generally appear in the order in which they were reported, not necessarily the order in which they occurred.
