Fridley Invite draws 20 high school dance teams.
High school dance teams from all over are in Fridley Saturday for the Fridley Invite competition at Fridley High School. Twenty teams are participating with more than 50 performances, according to the Fridley Tigers Dance Team Facebook page. Here is a video clip from the state high school jazz dance competition at Target Center, where teams from Fridley High School, Spring Lake Park High School and Totino-Grace High School performed Friday afternoon. Spring Lake Park and Totino-Grace advanced to the finals Friday night. All three schools have teams in the high kick competition on Saturday. Click here for photos and updates.

The Totino-Grace E'gals finished second in the Class AA high kick event, while Fridley and Spring Lake Park danced but did not advance.
Three local high-kick dance teams competed in the state tournament Saturday, with Totino-Grace High School making it two-for-two—finishing second in the Class AA high kick division to go along with the second-place trophy they earned Friday in jazz dance. The E'gals were the only Class AA team to take home trophies in both events. Fridley High School made the Class AA tournament field and danced well in the qualifying rounds, but didn't gain a spot in the top six. Spring Lake Park made the Class AAA meet in both jazz and high kick, winning two Section 3AAA crowns at Bloomington Kennedy last weekend. Editor's note: It was a big weekend for the Fridley area in dance competition, as five teams from three high schools won berths at this week's state tournament. Fridley, Spring Lake Park and Totino-Grace high-kick teams will compete on Saturday, and Totino-Grace and Spring Lake Park jazz teams will dance for state honors Friday. John Molene was there to see the Spring Lake Park Pantherettes' success at Saturday's sectional competition. Minnesota high school dance team heavyweight Spring Lake Park batted two-for-two Saturday in the 2011 Section 3AAA dance team tournament, winning team titles in both the high kick and jazz divisions and qualifying for state in both events. The team has 35 girls who love to dance and five coaches who love to teach.
You may not get to New York to see the Radio City Rockettes perform live at the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade, but Fridley has the next best thing: the Fridley High School dance team. The 35 girls who make up the team do flicks, hinges, fans, pirouettes, a la seconds and flutes just like the Rockettes. Fridley's dance team has been around since the 1970s but has recently gained strong popularity and built its skill levels, according to Emily Fausher, who co-coaches with Angela Burkhardt-Bixby. They get assistance from Jenna Packer, Annie Floss and Kelly Sommerville. Fausher and Burkhardt-Bixby set out three years ago to increase the competitive levels of the team.
