She's said to be first Somali-American delegate at the Democratic National Convention, and one of a record number of Muslim delegates at a national political convention.
Among the delegates from Minnesota in Charlotte, NC for the 2012 Democratic National Convention is Hinda Ali of Columbia Heights, who may be the first Somali-American delegate to a major-party national political convention. She is also one of what one organzation reported is the largest number of Muslim delegates at a national party convention. According to the Council on American-Islamic Relations, "recent estimates place the number of Muslim delegates at more than 100, up from 43 Muslim and Arab-American delegates at the 2008 Democratic convention, and 25 at the 2004 convention." Minneapolis Mayor R.T. Rybak is scheduled to speak on Tuesday, Sept. 4, alongside a number of Democratic Party heavyweights at the 2012 Democratic National Convention Tuesday. See the DNC's full Tuesday schedule below. Rybak tweeted Tuesday his remarks would come between 6:35–7:10 p.m. Central, while the posted DNC schedule has him starting off the 7 p.m. hour. That means there is a chance of at least some of his speech being carried live on national news broadcasts, most of which start at 7 p.m. Central.
