City Council OKs Ban on Parking That Blocks Mail Delivery

You can still park next to a mailbox—just not when the postal carrier is coming.

The City of Fridley wants to make sure you get your mail. The Fridley City Council unanimously approved a new ordinance Monday that would ban parking in front of a mailbox between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday, excluding federal holidays, in a way that blocks the mail carrier from delivering mail. The ordinance allows parking in front of a mailbox during those hours—unless the mail carrier is trying to deliver mail. “If you are parked in such a way that obstructs or interferes with mail delivery, that’s a violation of the ordinance,” said Fridley Director of Public Safety Don Abbott. Fire Chief Opposes Bill to Ban Fire-Sprinkler Requirements for Single-family Homes

Fridley's Fire Chief isn't in favor of legislation that passed the House over two Fridley reps' 'No' votes.

Tom Tillberry (DFL-51BA) and Kate Knuth (DFL-51A) cast votes against the bill. (Fridley's other representative, DFLer Carolyn Laine of House …

Fridley Council OKs Beer and Wine at 49er Days

Several council members questioned whether the change in city code opened the door to alcohol at other events.

The Fridley City Council approved changes to the city code Monday that would allow the sale of strong beer and wine at community festivals at Commons Park and Community Park.  The one community festival set to benefit from the council's action is 49er Days. The council considered explicitly limiting the change to 49er Days but in the end approved a more general definition: "Community festivals shall include Fridley 49er Days and other festivals of broad community appeal and participation as designated by City Council." Council Member Ann Bolkcom wonder whether the change would let the city deny a permit to "20 to 30 people who want to have a party." City Attorney Fritz Knaak said the council could in practice limit the new code language to…
