Fridley Council Takes up Home Depot Garden Center Permit and Own Salaries

Mayor and members would get first raise since 2009 under proposed increase.

Home Depot's garden center will keep its special use permit and Fridley's mayor and council members will be on their way to their first pay increase since 2009, if the council approves two items Monday. Last year the council gave Home Depot through this August to comply with parts of the permit concerning outdoor storage or lose its permit. City staff reports that Home Depot has complied. Farmers Markets in Fridley? Council to Hold Public Hearing on Allowing Them

Monday's meeting includes chance for public to weigh in.

The City of Fridley is considering rolling out the red—make that green—carpet for farmers markets to set up shop.  At the Fridley City Council meeting next Monday, there will be a public hearing on amending the city code for farmers markets, according to the meeting agenda posted Friday at the city's website. The Fridley City Council is set to approve a long-term plan for East River Road and set the city's political boundaries for the next decade at its meeting Monday, March 26, 7:30 p.m., at Fridley City Hall. Also on the agenda are plans for a paved path connecting Rice Creek and Unity Hospital, as well as improvements for pedestrians around Fridley Middle School and Stevenson and Hayes elementary schools. The council holds a pre-meeting beginning at 7 p.m., also open to the public. The regular meeting is shown live on cable channel 17 and again throughout the week. MAP: See the Streets the City of Fridley Plans to Rehab in 2012

The city council holds a public hearing on the project Monday.

Note: This is not an official City of Fridley map. The Fridley City Council will hold a public hearing Monday on a plan to rehabilitate 15 streets, mostly in the Rice Creek Terrace neighborhood. The hearing will take place during the council's regular meeting that starts at 7:30 p.m. in the council chambers at Fridley City Hall. The project includes "street and utility improvements, including asphalt reclaiming, hot mix bituminous paving, water main replacement, concrete curbing, and miscellaneous restoration," according to the full agenda for the meeting. Fridley Council Meets Monday

Read the Fridley Council agenda, including a request for proposals on garbage and recycling.

The Fridley City Council will start a search for a company to provide trash and recycling pickups if it approves a request-for-proposals (RFP) at its meeting Monday night. The city's current contract with Allied Waste Services expires on March 31, 2012. The RFP allows for Allied and other companies to compete for residential service. The meeting starts at 7:30 p.m. at the council chambers at Fridley City Hall. It also includes a public meeting on the 2012 City of Fridley budget. Fridley Council Housekeeping: Unpaid Bills, Street Assessments

Two property owners objected to assessments on street they don't use.

The Fridley City Council wrapped up some fiscal-year-end business by holding public hearings; approving special assessments for street improvements and nuisance clean-up; and certifying delinquent utility bills to Anoka County for collection with 2012 property tax at its meeting Monday evening at city hall. The council held public hearings at City Hall on the nuisance abatements and street improvement assessments. No one appeared for the nuisance abatements hearing although the city did receive a couple of written objections to paying them. The charges for city cleaning or removal of nuisances affected 41 properties this year and ranged from about $25 to about $7,400. The total cost of the city’s work was more than $38,000. I hope those business owners fight the assessment. This is the dark little secret of cities, paying for the liabilities they took on under the suburban growth ponzi scheme. Maintaining streets wouldn't enhance property values *even if* the businesses had direct access to the street in question.   more ›
