Totino-Grace Boys Hockey Tops Spring Lake Park, Advances to Section Semifinals

The Eagles defeated the Panthers 5-2 Friday night to reach the Section 4A semifinals next Tuesday.

The Totino-Grace High School boys' hockey team began the road to the state tournament with a 5-2 Section 4A quarterfinal victory Friday over the Panthers from Spring Lake Park High School. The Eagles had a bye for the first round while the Panthers defeated the St. Paul Saints to advance to the quarterfinal round. Totino-Grace got an early goal at the 2:14 mark from senior Xavier Fust to give the Eagles a 1-0 lead at Aldrich Arena. Panthers forward Nick Turbitt answered with two goals—one while his team was shorthanded—to put Spring Lake Park ahead 2-1 at the end of the first period. The Eagles were able to regroup after the first period. Totino-Grace senior Brian Schlagel scored a power play goal at 4:43 to tie the game at 2.  From that …

Slideshow: Totino-Grace Boys Hockey Drop Game to Benilde-St. Margaret's

It was tight through two periods but the Eagles fell in the third.

The Totino-Grace High School Eagles visited the Benilde-St. Margaret's Red Knights for a boys hockey matchup at the St. Louis Park Rec Center. It was a closely contested game through two periods, filled with hard skating and crisp passing by both teams. The Eagles entered the third period behind 2-1. Benilde-St. Margaret's then went on a 4-0 scoring rampage to defeat Totino-Grace, who came into the game ranked fourth in Class A, by a final score of 6-1. It was the Eagles' second loss to the Red Knights this season.

Totino-Grace Hockey Torches Tartan 6-1

Four first-period goals and a relentless attack set the tone for the Eagles' lopsided victory.

Totino-Grace High School had little trouble dispatching the Tartan Titans on Thursday night, with two goals from Andrew McDonald and an attack that was, at times, relentless. The Eagles are currently ranked fourth among Minnesota's Class A high schools, behind St. Thomas Academy, Blake and Hermantown. Eagles head coach Mark Loahr found little to criticize after his team's 6-1 victory. “I thought we could have scored one or two more tonight. I thought we played pretty well apart from a couple minutes here and there.” His opposite number was realistic ahead of the matchup. “We have to play very disciplined hockey tonight,” Tartan co-head coach Steve Romanchuk said before the game. “We have to play our positions without mistakes. We have to …

Totino-Grace Boys Hockey Wins 4-3 Over Rival Spring Lake Park

Spring Lake Park made it interesting near the end with two quick goals but couldn't overcome a 4-1 deficit.

Sometimes, it's simply too little, too late. That's what the Spring Lake Park High School boys' hockey team found out in a 4-3 loss to North Suburban conference rival No. 4-ranked Totino-Grace High School Thursday night. The Totino-Grace team (14-2-0, 9-1-0 conference) looked like it would skate to a comfortable 4-1 win on their home ice Thursday at Parade Ice Garden in Minneapolis. But that was before a goal from Spring Lake Park (8-10-0, 4-3-0 conference), with just over a minute remaining in the game, shrunk the deficit—followed by another. "We realized they weren't out of the game at all," Totino-Grace junior forward Jeff Daugherty said. "We had to step up on 'D' [defense]. "We've got to close it down at the end of games better. That's…

Totino-Grace Boys Hockey Suffers Second Loss of Season

Benilde-St. Margaret's got three quick first-period goals to win the North Suburban showdown 9-2.

In an intriguing matchup between the top two boys hockey teams in the North Suburban conference, Totino-Grace lost to Benilde-St. Margaret's Saturday afternoon by a lopsided score of 9-2. The Eagles lost their second game of the season on their home ice. The Red Knights have now won seven of eight games. It was clear after a 5-1 Benilde-St. Margaret's (13-2-0, 6-0-0 conference) lead at the first intermission that Totino-Grace (12-2-0, 8-1-0 conference) was going to have a tall order to fill. "They had a lot of speed, and we really didn't have an answer for it," Totino-Grace head coach Mark Loahr said. "But they're a really good team; that's why they're fifth in the state." The game opened with a quick score and another, short-handed goal …
