Kerry Baker Remembered as Loving Man with Ready Laugh

He died Jan. 1 when a snowplow truck hit his bike on East River Road in Fridley.

Kerry Steven Baker is being mourned by family and friends as a generous man with a "good heart," always ready with a smile and a laugh. Baker, 46, was killed on Jan. 1 at about 7 a.m. while bicycling in the 4700 block of East River Road in Fridley. A private snowplow truck hit his bike in an apparent head-on crash, according to the Anoka County Sheriff's Office. Baker's funeral is set for Saturday at 2 p.m. in Ham Lake. Brittany Cernohlavek, 19, said she knew Kerry as "uncle" for as long as she can remember—even though he was really her father's best friend. She said Baker had at times lived with her and her parents, Dale Cernohlavek and Shannon Bacon, at their house in northeast Minneapolis.  "He was a nice guy," Bridget Cernohlavek said…

Updated: Cyclist Killed by Plow Had No Lights

Kerry Steven Baker, 46, was dead at the scene Sunday on East River Road in Fridley.

Update (Tuesday, 4:30 p.m.): Investigators won't know for weeks whether the cyclist who died Sunday in a crash with a snowplow was impaired by alcohol or drugs. According to Cmdr. Paul Sommer of the Anoka County Sheriff's Office, "it has yet to be determined if alcohol or other chemicals played a role in the death. Toxicology typically takes weeks to get back." Kerry Steven Baker, 46, was dead at the scene when Fridley police arrived at the scene at 7 a.m. Sunday (about an hour before sunrise) in the 4700 block of East River Road. In a statement Tuesday, Sommer said the sheriff's office does not suspect alcohol played a role on the driver of the private snowplow truck, which was not plowing snow at the time. Baker was riding north in the …

Roman Kotas Returns to School

Two months after a car hit his bike, the 13-year-old Fridley boy is back at school.

Roman Kotas returns to school in Fridley Monday for the first time since a car struck the 13-year-old on Mississippi Street NE while he was riding his bike on July 14.  He wrote in his CaringBridge journal Sunday evening: I can't wait to start school tomorrow and to see all of my friends. My mom and dad said that I could write the last Caring Bridge journal entry and it's been great to be able to say thank you to all of my neighbors, friends, family and teachers. He begins the journal enty with a sober assessment of his condition ("I almost died"): I've seen the pictures of my very early days in the hospital and was kind of scared at how damaged I looked. I looked like something out of the SAW franchise. And I am not done yet. I still need…

Fridley Boy Hit by Car Aims to Come Home Soon

Therapy is going well for Roman Kotas at Gillette Hospital.

Roman Kotas, the boy injured when a car hit his bike on Mississippi Street last summer, could return to his Fridley home from Gillette Hospital as early as this month. That's the word on his CaringBridge website, where his parents keep a journal of his progress. On Wednesday orthopedic surgeons were set to examine his leg and decide whether they could take out the pins and release him Sept. 16. Recently Roman Kotas' family has been able to get passes to take him out of the hospital, first for an Indian buffet—his choice—and then for an overnight stay at home. Some CaringBridge journal excerpts: It's clear that Roman's most long-lasting challenge will be with his eye sight. His vision on the right side cuts off about half way around leaving…

UPDATE: Fridley's Roman Kotas Moves Hospitals After Bike Crash

A month after a car hit his bike, he moved from HCMC to Gillette Children's.

Updated below: Roman Kotas, the Fridley boy who suffered severe head trauma in a bike-car crash on Mississippi Street NE, has moved to Gillette Children's Specialty Healthcare in St. Paul.  The move, from Hennepin County Medical Center where Kotas went immediately after the July 14 accident, came after he showed good progress, according to his parents' journal at CaringBridge: Roman's CAT scan came back looking just great. We were so relieved that there won't have to be any more procedures or delays. And there won't be any more last minute tests that might stand in the way of moving him to Gillete. ... He loves to talk on the phone so today he talked to Grandma and his teacher, Ms. Lee. We also showed him the Caring Bridge site and he was …
