Q&A: Fire at Fridley Legion? Truck-SUV Crash on East River Road?

Here's what happened at a couple incidents passersby in Fridley noticed.

Fridley folks see things all the time and share tips with or ask questions of Patch. That's how posts about a sheared utility pole and smashed bus shelter this week came to be. On December 4, 2012 at 8:44 AM Fridley Police were dispatched to the area of E River Rd and 79th Way on a report of a personal injury crash. Fridley American Legion Baseball Players Set ERA, Batting Average Records

The Post 303 team recognized star players at an end-of-year banquet.

The Post 303 Legion Baseball Team concluded their 26th season by hosting a season-ending banquet to celebrate the season's performance. The team, made up of players from Fridley and Totino-Grace High School, finished the season with a record of 22-14 and finished in the top 3 in three separate tournaments this summer.  At the banquet, players were recognized who contributed to the team's success this summer:  Rookie MVP: Dominic Wippler, who will begin his senior year at Totino-Grace High School, finished the season with a .318 batting average Pitcher of the Year: Gabe Kastenmeier, a 2012 Graduate from Totino-Grace High School. Gabe finished the season with 7 wins and 0 losses, facing 187 batters and giving up 31 hits. His .64 season ERA …

Charities, Vikings stadium will share proceeds from new high-tech gaming.

Electronic pulltabs are coming to a charitable-gambling site near you, thanks to financing provisions in the Minnesota Vikings stadium bill signed into law last week. Do you plan to try them out? Two local American Legion posts are featured in a Star Tribune article about the new electronic pulltabs—the Fridley post is pictured and the manager at the Kraus-Hartig post in Spring Lake Park is quoted: Don LaCroix, manager of the Spring Lake Park American Legion, is among the hundreds of charitable gambling leaders waiting to hear how Minnesota will roll out its games -- games that haven't even been invented by a manufacturer yet. Rep. Keith Ellison spoke against admission charge for congressional town hall meetings.

Keith Ellison (D-MN), Fridley's representative in Congress.  American Legion On MPR's Capitol View, Tom Scheck reported Tuesday that the American Legion's national convention will be held from Aug. 27 to Sept. 1 in Minneapolis. President Obama, GOP presidential candidate Michele Bachmann, Gov. Mark Dayton and Rep. Keith Ellison will be some of the speakers at the event. Fridley Ends Run at Gopher Classic Baseball Tourney

The Fridley American Legion baseball team finished the weekend with a 3-2 record.

The Fridley American Legion baseball team finished up play at the Gopher Classic on Sunday at Bloomington’s Red Haddox Field. Fridley finished the tournament with a 3-2 record. Eastview won the tournament with a perfect 5-0 record and advanced to Monday’s round of 16. The Thunder will play Monday against Manitoba in Bloomington. Fridley opened up play on Friday with a 12-8 loss to Eastview, but rebounded Friday afternoon with a 5-4 win over Gillette, WY. On Saturday, Fridley lost to Bloomington Gold 6-4 but again bounced back. Fridley beat Sartell 6-5 to even its record at 2-2 heading into Sunday’s final game. On Sunday, Fridley defeated Plymouth, IN, by an 8-6 margin to secure a winning record at the tournament.

Mayor Proclaims Poppy Days in Fridley May 20-21

American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars officials were on hand.

Fridley Mayor Scott Lund read the Poppy Days Proclamation at Monday's city council meeting. Poppy Days are May 20 and 21.
