All ages are part of 5K run that starts, ends in Commons Park.
More than 200 people were set to take part in the Fridley Kids in Action 5K Fun Run Saturday morning that starts and ends in Commons Park. Organizer Karin Beckstrand said all ages have registered for the run. "A lot of families running or walking [the course]," she said. You can upload your photos or videos to this post! Beckstrand, a music teacher at Hayes Elementary organized the event with Kim Gardner, a physical education teacher at Stevenson Elementary. In February both schools hosted Olympic hopeful runners, including Katie McGregor at Hayes and Heather Kampf at Stevenson as well as other runners from Team USA Minnesota. Beckstrand also works at Fridley schools' after-school Learning Academy and at Life Time Fitness in Eden Prairie, …

Of Fridley's three reps in House, she was only 'No' vote.
State Rep. Carolyn Laine (DFL-50A) explained her "No" vote on the Minnesota Vikings stadium bill in an email to constituent Wednesday: The Vikings stadium bill was one of the hardest votes I recall as a state representative. There are good and important reasons both to support and to oppose the proposal. I listened carefully to them all. Based on my own conscience, as well as what I discerned to be the majority opinion of my constituents, I finally voted no. Although the argument that stadium construction would provide much needed jobs was extremely persuasive to me – my heart goes out to unemployed trades people – I could not rationalize the stadium as the best way to do that. (A robust bonding bill would create opportunities all over the…
Final tally was 38-28 in favor; both Fridley senators spoke during floor debate.
A final vote on the Minnesota Vikings stadium bill Tuesday had Fridley's state senators on opposite sides of the issue. The stadium bill passed 38-28 after more than 11 hours of floor debate, with Barb Goodwin (DFL-50) voting in favor and Pam Wolf (R-51) voting against. Wolf had pledged to vote no, but Goodwin's vote was a mystery until a Y appeared next to her name on the Senate's electronic tally board—one of the last votes to be cast. Goodwin had in recent weeks asked constituents for their opinions and abstained during her last vote in committee on the bill. At a hearing last December she called the planned stadium "extravagant." Voting on Amendments The two senators, who represent different areas of Fridley, often voted together in…
Dan Reber, who bowls in Fridley, placed 2nd in national tournament.
Dan Reber won big in Las Vegas recently—bowling. His home bowling alley is AMF Maple Lanes in Fridley, but the Crystal resident was in Las Vegas for the AMF National In-League Tournament, where he placed second in Division A. That was worth a prize of $25,000—awarded in the form of a giant check. "Most people don't ever see $25,000," he told Northwest Community Television Channel 12. He's been bowling since he was 11 years old, Reber, 64, told Channel 12 before the tournament. "He was the guy everyone was looking at to probably win the thing," Chad Dodson of Towanda, IL, told The Pantagraph in Bloomington, IL. Dodson beat Reber in the final for the top prize of $50,000. "I had so much fun," Reber told Channel 12. "I'd do it again and I …

Fridley rep says constituent comments are 15:1 in favor.
Here's how state Rep. Tom Tillberry (DFL-51B) explained his "Yes" vote on the Minnesota Vikings stadium bill in an email Tuesday: I was an original author to the Kreisel charitable gambling bill, which now turned into the Viking stadium bill. We needed to resolve the stadium issue and this was the best way possible for this legislature at this time. Although we have other needs in our community that have more priority, the decision to build the stadium would supply us with more job opportunities for people who have been waiting for work. I can't be sure that the bonding bill will pass. We need to get our workers back to work. If we wait for a good time to build a stadium, it will never be built. It's been argued for over 6 years and my …
Of Fridley's 2 senators, Wolf is a No, Goodwin abstained in committee.

John Hanner took first at the Clifton Highlands Golf Club.
John Hanner of Fridley made a great golf showing at a tournament at Clifton Highlands Golf Club near Prescott, WI, over the weekend. The Eau Claire Leader-Telegram reported Hanner's "four-stroke Chippewa Valley Golf Association victory" and the association's website offered further details—including a photo of a smiling Hanner, who "posted a 69 on the 6400 yard Clifton Highlands course," and the welcome fact that the tournament narrowly but completely escaped weekend downpours.

I share your opposition to the Viking’s stadium bill. I oppose the Vikings new football stadium for many good and sensible reasons. As you know, in March an agreement for a $975 million fixed-roof stadium near the Metrodome was announced between the Vikings, the Governor, Legislative leaders, the mayor and council president of Minneapolis, and various business and labor leaders. The state would …   more ›
