Fridley Mom, Kids Escape 'Very Significant Fire' at Able St. Duplex

Three went to hospital with 'minor injuries,' fire official says.

A Friday morning fire in a duplex on Able Street NE sent a mother and two small children to the hospital with minor injuries, according to Fridley Assistant Fire Chief John Crelly. Fire crews arrived in the 7300 of Baker Street NE (the rear side of the house and more accessible side of the block) at about 9:20 a.m. Friday to find "lots of smoke" and fire in the back of the house. "We've had a very good day," Crelly said, in reference to firefighters' success at battling the blaze. "It was a very significant fire." Automatic mutual-aid response came from the Columbia Heights, St. Anthony and Spring Lake Park-Blaine-Mounds View fire departments. "We used everybody" to deal with the fire, Crelly said. Law-enforcement departments from across Anoka County began the county's annual memorial service for fallen officers Wednesday with a squad-car procession that left from Fridley. The site, near the Church of St. William, was where Deputy Ernest Zettergren was killed nearly 50 years ago—one of seven officers in Anoka County to lose their lives in the line of duty. Sheriff James Stuart led a ceremony in the atrium at the Anoka County government center in Anoka. Attending the ceremony from the Fridley Police Department were Director of Public Safety Don Abbott, Lt. Mike Monsrud, Capt. Bob Rewitzer, Capt. Brian Weierke and Off. Joe Magana. Missing: Family and Friends Seek News of Dirk Paaverud of Fridley

Police not yet officially listing him as missing person.

Family and friends of Fridley resident Dirk Paaverud say he hasn't been seen since Saturday and are asking for help locating him. Lanae Paaverud posted a flyer (see PDF) on Facebook (at the Fridley Cancer Cluster page) with this note: "My brother-in-law, Dirk Paaverud (Fridley resident), hasn't been heard from or seen since Saturday morning! He was last seen in Fridley, then Coon Rapids on Sat. ... We want him to know that 'everything is ok, please call or come home or check your email.'" Asked about Paaverud, Lt. (UPDATED) 2 Dead in Triple Shooting in St. Anthony Village

Incident is in 3200 block of 39th Ave. NE, southeast of Fridley.

Updated (10 a.m. Wednesday): WCCO-AM radio and WCCO-TV reported from the St. Anthony police press conference this morning that other family members were home the Monday night during a triple shooting ended in the deaths of a husband and wife. The bodies of the couple were found in the driveway of their townhome. Their 25-year-old son who was shot in the leg may not have been a target, police said—he may have been trying to intervene or may have been hit by a stray bullet. Three other children—including a daughter, 16, and two sons, 19 and 23, were unhurt. Police are calling the incident a domestic fight, in which the husband shot the wife and son then himself. 'Diaper Duty' Charges: They Shaved Girl's Hair, Put Her in Diaper, Made Her Run in Public

Prosecutors say Fridley couple humiliated girl, 12, over schoolwork.

Anoka County prosecutors have filed charges against a Fridley couple who they say punished a 12-year-old girl by shaving her hair and making her wear a diaper and little else in public. The incident drew a crowd of 50 people in the 1600 block of 68th Avenue NE and lasted 30 minutes Monday evening, Fridley police said. It's the third time it's happened, according to the criminal complaint filed Wednesday morning. Stephanie Ann Broten, 38, and Darnell Alan Landrum, 35, each faces one count of malicious punishment of a child and remain in the Anoka County jail. Prosecutors Charge Repeat Abuser with Domestic Assault

A Fridley resident who has two prior domestic assault convictions is accused of throwing his girlfriend to the ground in downtown Hopkins.

Prosecutors arrested a 28-year-old Fridley man Sunday after witnesses in downtown Hopkins saw him grab his girlfriend and throw her to the ground, causing her to hit her head on the pavement. Officers arrived to find the woman crying as she sat against a building on the 1000 block of Mainstreet, according to charging documents prepared by Police Sgt. Mike Glassberg and filed Tuesday. She said she and Landon Gregory Braaten got into an argument while walking downtown and he pushed her to the ground. Medical personnel treated the woman for a head injury. Prosecutors charged Braaten with felony domestic assault, which carries a penalty of up to five years in prison and a $10,000 fine. In April, Braaten was convicted on separate charges of …

Couple Made Girl Run in Public with Diaper, Police Say

A mother and her boyfriend shaved her daughter's hair, put a diaper on her  and made her down the street as punishment for bad grades at school Monday—all before a crowd of about 50 people, according to Fridley police and the St. Paul Pioneer Press.* The woman and man remain in Anoka County Jail Tuesday after police arrested them at the Rice Creek Townhomes in the 1600 block of 68th Avenue NE on suspicion of malicious punishment of a child. READ IT: Crime Alert Points to Burglary on Trinity Drive NE

Fridley Police say home in Sylvan Hills neighborhood was hit Friday.

In a crime alert (see PDF), the Fridley Police Department said a home in the 6200 block of Trinity Drive NE was burglarized on April 27 between 1:30–5:30 p.m. The route in appears to have been an unlocked garage service door, then forcing entry through another door into the house, according to the alert.  The residents reported video games and equipment missing as well as jewelry. Call 9-1-1 if you have information that could help police locate a suspect or suspects. The home is in the Sylvan Hills neighborhood, just west of Sylvan Hills Park.
