Obituary: Octave "Oddie" Zachmann of Fridley

Oddie served in the U.S. Navy and was the owner and operator of Reliable Auto Body in North Minneapolis for over 35 years.

Octave "Oddie" Zachmann of Fridley  Sept. 16, 1926 - March 9, 2013  Born in St. Michael, Minnesota and passed away at his home in Fridley.  Preceded in death by wife, Lorraine; son, Dennis; granddaughter, Lisa Zachmann; parents, Christine (Wey) and Clem; sister, Ann Kons; brothers, Bernie and Emmett.  Survived by loving wife, Maureen “Mike”; daughter, Anne (Don) Savitski; sons, Mark (Mary Ann), Jim and his friend, Debbie Kruger; sisters, Eileen Champeau and Dolores Robeck; brother, Carroll (Catherine); sister-in-law, Gerry Zachmann; brothers-in-law, Frank “Butch” Pelz and Claire Miller; 14 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren, and 2 great-great-grandchildren; many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.  Oddie proudly served in the US Navy …

Waleria Zyla age 84 of Fridley. Preceded by loving husband, Walter; sisters, Helen Zbanski, Wanda Roman; brother, Wladyslaw Palka; former husband, Stephan Czepil. Survived by sons, Tom (Kari) Zyla, Mark Zyla & Renee Johnson; she will be missed by loving nieces, nephews, friends & also by her canine companions, Rascal, Bear & Izzy. Funeral for John "Jack" Meyer Set for 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Philip's

He served Fridley on HRA board, school board and historical society.

The life of a Fridley leader will be celebrated Thursday when friends and family of John "Jack" Meyer gather for his memorial service at St. Philip's Lutheran Church. The service is set for 10 a.m., with visitation beforehand and a reception afterwards. Burial is at Fort Snelling. Meyer, who died Jan. 2, 2013, at the age of 89, was a devoted volunteer in Fridley, serving nine years on the District 14 school board and three decades on the city's Housing and Redevelopment Authority (HRA) board. He was also "a very loyal member of the Fridley Historical Society since it came into existence, and always available to help the Society in any way he could," according to the organization's past president, Robert Christenson. Totino-Grace Grad Sasha McHale Dies

She was an Eagles basketball standout and daughter of MN hoops legend Kevin McHale.

Sasha McHale, a Totino-Grace High School graduate and daughter of famed  basketball legend Kevin McHale, died Saturday at the age of 23 of medical complications related to lupus, according to media reports. A member of the Totino-Grace 2008 girls basketball Minnesota Class AAA championship team, McHale led the squad in blocked shots, according to the Star Tribune. She earned honorable mention on the all-state team that year, according to the St. Paul Pioneer Press, which quoted Totino-Grace Activities Director Mike Smith: "I just feel for those guys. ... Our thoughts and prayers are with them. This is something you never want to happen to anybody."

Senate Investigation Slams Medtronic on Infuse

Fridley-based Fortune 500 firm 'vigorously disagrees' with parts of the Finance Committee report.

A new U.S. Senate report says employees of Fridley-based Medtronic, Inc. secretly helped write articles in medical journals touting the company's InFuse spinal-surgery product and downplaying the product's downsides. The report, following a 16-month investigation by the Senate Finance Committee into how Medtronic marketed InFuse, also says the company paid $210 million over 15 years to physicians who authored favorable studies about the product. Medtronic disputed Senate investigators' claims in a statement: Medtronic does not agree with many of the findings in the staff report.
