Roman Kotas Returns to School

Two months after a car hit his bike, the 13-year-old Fridley boy is back at school.

Roman Kotas returns to school in Fridley Monday for the first time since a car struck the 13-year-old on Mississippi Street NE while he was riding his bike on July 14.

He wrote in his CaringBridge journal Sunday evening:

I can't wait to start school tomorrow and to see all of my friends. My mom and dad said that I could write the last Caring Bridge journal entry and it's been great to be able to say thank you to all of my neighbors, friends, family and teachers.

He begins the journal enty with a sober assessment of his condition ("I almost died"):

I've seen the pictures of my very early days in the hospital and was kind of scared at how damaged I looked. I looked like something out of the SAW franchise. And I am not done yet.

I still need a feeding tube removed from my stomach and the fixator removed from the bone in leg that I broke in the accident. And my brain is still healing and will continue to heal for a long time. When I can drive I will be the most cautious driver in history, besides my dad.
