Fridley School Board: Tech, Levies and More

Technology upgrades, teacher awards among information presented

Here are some of the items discussed at Tuesday's meeting of the .

Target Gift
The board moved to approve a $2,000 gift from Target Corporation and to thank them for it.

Teachers of Excellence
Superintendent Dr. Peggy Flathmann announced that five teachers in the Fridley School District had been recognized as Teachers of Excellence.

Technology Upgrades
Imina Oftedahl, director of educational services, reported on the district’s ongoing strategy of upgrading its technology:

  • Over the summer, hundreds of teacher and student computer workstations were replaced with laptops which are more powerful, more energy-efficient and less expensive.
  • Many administrative functions were placed online, such as bus routing, an online payment system, some food service processes; resulting in cost- and human resource savings.

Middle of Pack on State Aid Per Pupil
There are 355 school districts in Minnesota. Fridley ranks somewhere near the middle in state aid per student, at $8,900 per pupil; Minneapolis is first, receiving $12,400 per pupil.

School Levies Up for Vote
The board ended its meeting by urging everyone to vote on Nov. 11:

  • To renew the existing school district's operating referendum for 10 years
  • To renew the existing capital projects levy, also for 10 years, which provides funds for facility maintenance projects and technology

Board Member Gordon Backlund, somewhat tongue-in-cheek, reported that according to a recent survey, school board members ranked second only to clergy in the public’s estimate of trustworthiness.
