Anoka-Hennepin Board Hears More on 'Controversial Topics'

Draft rule gets slammed from all sides in district that includes part of Fridley.

A new policy on handling "controversial topics" remained itself controversial Monday, as the Anoka-Hennepin School Board held a second public hearing Monday in Coon Rapids.

Board member Scott Wenzel, who represents a portion of the district that includes the northwest corner of Fridley, summed up the situation this way, according to Minnesota Public Radio:

"It seems as we try to make it more clear, we're only making it more bureaucratic and less clear, which is quite amazing to me."

A parents' group, the Parents Action League, told the board they prefer the district's existing Sexual Orientation Curriculum Policy, according to the Star Tribune.

Two students presented a petition signed by more than 350 students who oppose both the existing policy and its proposed replacement, according to the Associated Press.

By vote of its membership, the local teacher's union also took a stand Monday against both the current and proposed policies, the St. Paul Pioneer Press reported.
