Fridley Mayor Ready for New Role in Theater

Fridley Mayor Scott Lund's first foray into the theater world was in his infamous impersonation of Elvis for the Stargazers gala two years ago. Now he readies for a small role in Fridley Community Theatre's production of 'Anything Goes'

One of the many gems in this weekend’s production of , by Fridley Community Theater, playing at Auditorium, is the appearance of none other than Fridley’s Mayor, Scott Lund.

Lund plays the Bishop, a rather small part—about 12 lines in total, he said. Still, he said he’s happy to take it on.

“These are some of the more unusual things a mayor does,” he said, “but nonetheless, I think a good mayor is one that is heavily involved in the community and rightly so.”

It isn’t the first time Lund has dipped his toes into the theater world. Two years, ago he was one of the performers in , the annual fundraiser benefitting arts programming in the Fridley school district (check this video at about the 1:05 mark to see for yourself). Dressed in a white bell-bottomed jumpsuit with a high collar, belt and  an Elvis wig, Lund performed “The Wonder of You” to the thrill of the audience.

“I think I shocked people that I could actually sing an Elvis tune,” he recalled.

About a month ago, Lund was approached about taking a role in Fridley Community Theatre’s production of Anything Goes. “I didn’t have to even try out for it,” he said. “They said, 'You would fit this particular character.’” Ever since, he has been attending rehearsals regularly and said he is looking forward to performing this weekend and next.

“I think it’s darn good entertainment, especially given the price,” he said. “I can’t imagine that the thing wouldn’t be sold out. I say that especially in consideration for all the work and effort that’s gone in—the dancing, the singing, all the lines. It’s one heck of a value.”

Anything Goes will be performed over two weekends: Friday and Saturday, July 29-30, and Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, August 5-7, 2011. All shows will begin at 7 p.m., with the exception of the finale which will be a Sunday afternoon matinee beginning at 3 p.m.

Performances are at the Fridley District Auditorium, 6000 W. Moore Lake Dr. Tickets are $10 for adults and $8 for students and seniors. Call 763-502-5100 to order reserved tickets. The finale on August 7 will offer ASL interpretation for the hearing-impaired.
