3 File to Run for Fridley Council Seat

Mayor Scott Lund has no challenger in re-election bid.

Here are the people who filed by Tuesday's deadline as candidates for elective offices representing Fridley.

Fridley Mayor and Council
Three men filed as candidates for Fridley council member-at-large
by the Tuesday deadline: Incumbent Bob Barnette, Rick Wolfe and Bruce Rhea. Rhea joined the race by filing Tuesday. Fridley Mayor Scott Lund will run unopposed. He was the only candidate to file for his position, according to the Minnesota Secretary of State website.

Because there are more than two candidates seeking the nonpartisan council seat, voters will elect two of the three in an Aug. 14, 2012 primary election to proceed to the general election on Nov. 6, 2012.

Columbia Heights School Board
Five men filed as candidates for three seats on the board of the Columbia Heights School District (Independent School District No. 13), which includes part of Fridley: Jon M. Foss, Ted Landwehr, John Larkin, Grant Nichols and Keith S. Roberts.

Landwehr and Roberts are incumbents. Vice-chair Joseph S. Sturdevant did not file for re-election, according to the Minnesota Secretary of State website. Larkin lives in Fridley; the other four candidates are Columbia Heights residents.

Anoka County Commission
Most of Fridley will this year because population in District 4 didn't change enough to trigger boundary changes and a new election. But one precinct in the city's far north belongs to District 5, where ABC Newspapers reports incumbent Carol LeDoux will face Scott Randall Bromley. Both live in Coon Rapids.

State Representative
Connie Bernardy (DFL) and Dale Helm (R) will vie to represent Fridley in the Minnesota House of Representatives in the new House District 41A.

The city of Fridley will go from having areas in three state House districts to being . Incumbent Reps. Tom Tillbery and Kate Knuth will not run for re-election in the new district.

When redistricting put them in the same district, from the Legislature. After (a former state representative herself), some media reports had him considering a primary challenge. But he and did not file as a candidate by Tuesday.

State Rep. Carolyn Laine (DFL), whose current district includes part of Fridley, will face Laura Palmer (R) in the general election to represent the new House District 41B, which does not Fridley.

State Senator
State Sen. Barb Goodwin (DFL) will face Gina Bauman (R) in the race to represent new Senate District 41, which includes all of the city of Fridley.

State Sen. Pam Wolf (R), whose current district includes part of Fridley, will face Alice M. Johnson (DFL) in the race to represent the new Senate District 37, which will not include Fridley.

U.S. House and Senate
Three men filed to challenge incumbent U.S. Rep. Keith Ellison (DFL), who is running for re-election to continue representing Fridley and Minnesota's Fifth Congressional District: Chris Fields of Minneapolis, the endorsed Republican candidate; Gary Boisclair (DFL), who lists a current residence in West Virginia; and Gregg A. Iverson (DFL) of Minneapolis. (Read more about this race.)

Eight men filed as challengers to U.S. Sen. Amy Klobuchar (DFL), who is also running for re-election. The field now includes four DFLers, three Republicans and two from the Independence Party.

Other Cities, Offices
It was feast or famine for candidate filings in neighboring cities. in Columbia Heights there are three candidates for mayor and eight candidates for two seats on the city council. But in Spring Lake Park, no one filed to run for two at-large seats on the city council, according to the Minnesota Secretary of State website.

No one filed for three North Suburban Hospital District seats.

The Tenth Judicial District in Anoka will have no contested races among 11 seats on the bench up for election.

And no one from Minnesota has yet filed for vice-president president of the United States of America but there are later filing deadline for those offices.

Withdrawing
The lineups of candidates could still change. Candidates who filed by the Tuesday deadline who decide to withdraw must do so by Thursday.
