Theft Accusation Results in Sex Offense Charge

Jashaun Remel Evans has been charged with third-degree criminal sexual conduct.

A theft report led to a criminal sexual conduct charge against a 19-year-old Fridley man.

A 15-year-old girl went to her aunt after items disappeared following a house party that happened while her mother was away, according to a criminal complaint filed this month. She later told police that her mother had let her stay with her grandparents while she was away and that her grandparents allowed her to stay home alone on Feb. 16.

She invited over her friend Jashaun Remel Evans, who was 18 at the time. Evans asked if he could invite others. The girl said no, but Evans arrived at the house with 10 other people.

The girls said that she went to her room for the night and that Evans came to her room after everyone left. She said they then had consensual sex and that Evans left the next morning, according to the court documents.

A few day’s later, she realized some of her mother’s items had been stolen. She told her aunt about it, and her aunt took her to police.

On March 15, the girl called Evans in front of police. He denied knowing anything about stolen property. When asked, he confirmed that he wore a condom when they had sex, according to court documents. And when she asked him if he knew how old she was, he said “not until recently” and ultimately hung up on her.

Six days later, Evans gave a statement to police in which he admitted having sex with the girl twice that evening, according to court documents. He told officers he knew she was a sophomore in high school who was 15 or 16 years old.

He denied stealing anything.

Evans has been charged with third-degree criminal sexual conduct—which is when the accused has sex with someone between 13 and 16 years old when they are more than 24 months older than the victim.

If convicted, Evans could be sentenced to as many as 15 years in prison and/or a $9,000 to $30,000 fine.
