'Stupid, Redneck Stuff' Results in Felony Weapons Charges for Two Stillwater Men

Two Stillwater men face felony weapons charges after allegedly shooting at street signs with a .40 Glock handgun as they drove from Stillwater to Hugo and back.

Two Stillwater men face felony weapons charges after participating in actions one suspect described to police as “stupid, redneck stuff.”

The Washington County Sheriff’s Office just after 8 p.m. on Jan. 20 responded to a report that occupants of a vehicle had just fired several shots while driving in the 10000 block of Myeron Road North in Stillwater Township.

A witness told the deputy that he was outside with his dog when he saw an occupant in a vehicle—that was traveling northbound on Myeron Road at approximately 50 mph—fire six or seven shots from a firearm in the direction of his neighbor’s home.

When deputies checked the area, one officer located five .40 caliber shell casings on the roadway in the 10800 block of Myeron Road.

As deputies spoke with neighbors, one of the officers heard two gunshots about 5 to 10 second apart, with the second shot sounded closer indicating the person firing the shot was moving.

When the deputy looked in the direction of the shots, the officer saw a lone vehicle traveling southbound on Myeron Road. The officer followed the vehicle into the city of Stillwater, where a traffic stop was initiated with the assistance of Stillwater Police Department.

The driver was identified as Craig Michael Cummings, 22, of Stillwater. The passenger was identified as Lee James Thompson, also 22, of Stillwater.

When police searched the vehicle, the officers found an uncased .40 Glock handgun in the glove compartment of the vehicle, the complaint states.

Thompson declined to speak with deputies, but Cummings reportedly told police he driving Thompson's vehicle while Thompson fired the handgun out of the passenger window.

Cummings described the action to police as “stupid, redneck stuff," the complaint states. Cummings reportedly told police that Thompson was shooting at street signs as they drove from Stillwater to Hugo and back.

Both men were charged by the Washington County Attorney’s Office with aiding and abetting dangerous weapons-with the intentional discharge of firearm that endangers safety, and aiding and abetting hunting-illegal transport of a firearm in motor vehicle.

Thompson also faces a gross misdemeanor charge of carrying and possessing a pistol without a permit in a public place (a gross misdemeanor).

Sigh... Trolls and pseudonymous postings. You can leave a post directly to a user by clicking on their name. If you have something to say to Shawn, use the "e-mail the author" function. The Patch nastiness is toxic. I realize a bit of irony, as I am not commenting on the original story, however the comments went off topic on post #3.

I appreciate this comment, Steve D. I try to moderate the comments and agree nastiness is toxic. I'm one person and Stillwater Patch gets a lot of comments... While I respect all kinds of opinion, I do ask that the conversation remain respectful. I'll try to do more moderating, but I also need commenters to police themselves from time to time. Thanks for posting.

I understand civil behavior, which does not include voluminous off-topic postings and sniping the comments of others. There is a considerable amount of rational dialog recently regarding the use of Internet comments by trolls and cyber-bullies. Many outlets have stopped allowing comments altogether because of such behavior.
