Updated: Police Pursuit Ends with Overturned Car

The driver fleeing Brooklyn Center police tried to hit a Fridley squad head-on, police say.

A vehicle sat overturned in a Spring Lake Park front yard four blocks north of Fridley late Sunday and into Monday, after a police pursuit that ended in a crash.

It started with a stolen vehicle in Brooklyn Park, according to Brooklyn Center police Brooklyn Center Police Sgt. Peggy Labatt. She said her department began pursuit of the vehicle after the driver fled police.

The crash resulted in "undetermined injuries," Labatt said. She wouldn't say how many people had been in the overturned vehicle. No police were injured, she said.

Accident reconstruction work was underway through the night, with Brooklyn Center and Fridley police on the scene early Monday morning, along with the State Patrol.

"It's all under investigtion," Labatt said. She would not confirm a report that the driver of the fleeing vehicle had tried to hit Fridley police.

The incident was not related to an Amber Alert issued Sunday for a child who was found Sunday evening in Spring Lake Park, Labatt said.

UPDATE (10 a.m.): Fridley police weren't involved in the pursuit, according to Lt. Mike Monsrud, but the chase went through Fridley and the fleeing vehicle nearly hit a Fridley squad car.

The driver of the stolen vehicle "attempted to strike a Fridley squad car head-on. The officer was able to avoid a collision by quickly pulling off the road into a parking lot" in the 7400 block of Baker Street NE at 10:47 p.m., according to Monsrud.

That's about six blocks south of site where the fleeing vehicle came to rest. At 8:30 a.m. Monday the vehicle was gone, leaving a ripped-up lawn, a few stray pieces of plastic and a compact disc in the yard at 79th and Able.

The intersection is also the southwest corner of the Spring Lake Park High School campus.

The case is still under investigation, with charges pending in Brooklyn Center as well as in Fridley for first-degree assault on a police officer, according to Monsrud.
