Pioneer Press: Holding Cell is Home for 'Jane Doe'

Inmates like Fridley's "Jane Doe" who won't give jailers their names are a rarity—and they usually break their silence in eventually, according to the St. Paul Pioneer Press, citing the Anoka County Sheriff's Office.

Conditions aren't especially comfy for people behind bars who refuse standard booking procedures such as identifying themselves and allowing a photographer to take an official mugshot, Cmdr. Paul Sommer told the newspaper:

"She basically has a toilet and a sink and a place to lie down and that's it," Sommer said.

[Fridley Police Lt. Mike] Monsrud said the circumstances of Jane Doe's arrest were unusual too.

"She changed the locks, hung some blinds. She had gone in and installed some crown molding. Hung a shower curtains," Monsrud said. "She was, like, fixing the place up, which is very unusual for someone who just happens to be squatting in a residence. We're all curious (what her story is)."

He said investigators think she may have come from Chicago, "based on general direction of travel," but it's just a theory at this point.

"Staff at jail are aware of what's going on," Monsrud said. "Once they notify us that she's cooperating with the booking process, we'll send a detective over. So far she hasn't given us any indication that she plans to tell us her name."
