UPDATED PHOTOS: Mobile Home Burns at Park Plaza Co-op in Fridley

Update (10:45 p.m. Tuesday): There is word this morning on the condition of the kitten injured in the residential fire Monday at Park Plaza Co-op manufactured home park in Fridley.

Natividad Seefeld, co-op board president, reports on Mittens via email:

I took it to in Inver Grove Heights as I have been with them since around 1995 or so. They are the best and most caring place one would ever want to take their pet. The staff are always so kind and gentle. I got a call this morning that the little boy Mittens will make it. All 4 paws are wrapped and will need to be for a bit. He was given pain meds right away and kept at the hospital. They will keep him until they hear if the family can take him. Thank you tons to Southview you are the very best ever.

Original post (5:30 p.m. Monday): Fire destroyed a shed and damaged the back of a home at the Park Plaza Co-op manufactured-home park in Fridley Monday afternoon.

A woman and two children are OK, but a small pet cat suffered burns. Co-op board president Natividad Seefeld said they were making arrangements to bring the cat to an emergency clinic in Coon Rapids, and in the meantime wrapping it in wet towels.

Seefeld asked the fire department for help contacting the Red Cross for shelter for the family, but she said any of the other Park Plaza residents would also take them in.

Passerby Nick Davidson watched as fire crews from Fridley, Columbia Heights, St. Anthony and Spring Lake Park-Blaine-Mounds View checked walls and underneath the home for remaining hot spots.

Davidson said he was driving on Fireside Drive NE when he saw flames rising from the back of the home as high as the surrounding trees.

Workers from the nearby Friendly Chevrolet dealership were already on the scene, checking on the home and its residents, he said.

Assistant Chief John Crelly said firefighters continued to check that the fire wasn't rekindling in walls or underneath the home.

"We're making sure we're ahead of it," he said.

A strong wind from the south was a factor in the fire spreading and in firefighters' ability to contain it, Crelly said.

The shed is a total loss, Crelly said. He hadn't yet assessed damage to the home, and he said the cause was under investigation.

Three hose lines led to the fire scene. The initial call came in at about 4:15 p.m., as indicated by a scanner report from Twin Cities Fire Wire. By 4:15 p.m., the fire was knocked down, according to reports on Anoka County Emergency Dispatch radio.
