Grass Fire Burns Hwy. 65 Median at I-694

Likely cause: a tossed cigarette or something similar.

A rush hour grass fire in the Hwy. 65 median sent smoke over I-694 Friday afternoon.

Fridley firefighters put it out quickly by applying water, leaving about 50 feet of the median burned, according to Fire Chief John Berg. 

The fire took place between the northbound and southbound lanes of Hwy. 65 just north of I-694.

Berg said a tossed cigarette or some other hot item likely started the fire.
