UPDATED: Fridley Police Have Leads in 'Jane Doe' Case

Update (1:30 p.m. Monday): The leads on the "Jane Doe" case that Fridley police are following up on today came from members of the public not in Minnesota, Fridley Police Capt. Brian Weierke said Monday afternoon.

Weierke said detectives have received "a couple of reports from people out of state." He said he believed the tipsters learned of the case from widespread media coverage, which began last Thursday morning when that a woman arrested in Fridley July 9 was refusing to give jailers her name.

The story is "really out there" in the media, Weierke said.

Based on , police have developed a theory that she may come from the area around Chicago and Gary, IN. They first to law enforcement agencies there and then to the media.

Original post (10:30 a.m. Monday): Fridey police have received some leads on the identification of "Jane Doe," the woman they arrested a week ago in a vacant house on Rice Creek Way who refuses to give her name.

"We did get some reports in over the weekend about some possible identification of Jane Doe and will be following up on them today," Fridley Police Capt. Brian Weierke said by email Monday morning.

The case has received wide news coverage since . But a week after her arrest, the online inmate roster of the Anoka County Jail continues to say "No photos available." (She has refused to cooperate with the jail photographer for a booking photo.)

Authorities on Friday—not an official mugshot but a likeness, despite her closed eyes, that they hope will prompt the public to help ID her.

Contempt of Court
If police and prosecutors are able to present in court what they believe to be Jane Doe's true identity, that may not be enough to get her out of the contempt of court judgement against her for refusing to tell the judge her real name.

Her Conditions of Sentence (see PDF) seem to indicate that the defendant herself must say who she is:  Jane Doe "can purge [the conviction] by giving correct name and DOB [date of birth]," the document says.

Jane Doe is in jail on charges of trespassing and receiving stolen property, with bail set for $100,000 and a court date next month. The contempt of court conviction on which the judge sentenced her to 60 days is a separate case.

"The judge has not made any statements as to whether or not the defendant would ever be released before the 60 days is up," court spokesperson Kyle Christopherson said by email Friday.
