Courts Roundup: Sentence, Conviction, Charge

Crimes or allegations in Fridley or by Fridley residents.

Here are recent items from courts and police.

  • On Thursday, a federal jury in Minneapolis convicted Joseph Paul Young, 40, or Rogersville, MO, of robbing the TCF Bank, 5205 Central Ave. NE, in 2007, as well as three other bank robberies. According to the U.S. Attorney's office, Young, who became known as the plaid- or flannel-shirt robber, got about $1,196 from the Fridley bank. He faces a maximum of 20 years in prison on each of the four counts.
  • A Fridley woman received a sentence of one year in jail Thursday for causing a crash while driving drunk in Coon Rapids last August that left a woman in another car paralyzed, the Star Tribune reported. It was Kristin Kealy's first offense.
  • The Hennepin County Attorney's office charged a Fridley resident last Friday with aggravated robbery and assault. Prosecutors said Reginald Duane Smith tried to rob a man on June 16 in Minneapolis, then stabbed him when he said he had no money.
  • The Fridley Police Department found no fault with a member of the force in an internal investigation that followed an Anoka County Sheriff's probe that found nothing illegal. According to Lt. Mike Monsrud in an email Thursday: "The internal investigation has been completed. The complaint was not-sustained and there was no disciplinary action taken against the officer. The complainant has been notified of these results. I am unable to comment any further on that investigation due to data practice laws."
