Court Date for Fridley's 'Jane Doe' Comes and Goes

Tammy Thomas was set to appear before a judge Tuesday, but it didn't happen that way.

The saga of Fridley's "Jane Doe" continued not to go as expected Tuesday.

Tammy Thomas—arrested in a house on Rice Creek Way NE in Fridley July 9—had a court hearing in Anoka Tuesday afternoon.

In a case in which nothing has gone according to normal procedure, what happened Tuesday was ... nothing.

After an hour of other defendants' appearances on charges from heroin possession to buying a soundboard stolen from a church, Judge Daniel O'Fallon's docket was empty and a pair of reporters were the only people remaining in the gallery.

That's despite a court employee confirming Monday that Thomas' hearing was set for Tuesday. Thomas' name continued to flash on electronic schedule boards in Anoka County Courthouse corridors Tuesday afternoon.

Court workers Wednesday said they didn't know why Thomas' court date was put off a day.

The court roster lists Thomas as appearing on two cases. One was related to the Fridley charges—trespassing, ID theft, stolen property—and the other was related to out-of-state charges, according to a court records staffperson. Police have said Thomas crossed Wisconsin by motor vehicle en route to Fridley from west of Chicago.

Thomas' public defender, Jennifer Pradt, was at a jury trial Tuesday that could go all week, according to the Anoka County Public Defender's office. Pradt didn't immediately return a message Tuesday afternoon.

'I Have the Right to Remain Silent'
Thomas defied law enforcement and court procedures from the time of her arrest in a vacant Fridley house to her record three-week refusal to cooperate with Anoka County jail procedures such as fingerprinting and booking photographing.

After a conviction for contempt of court for not giving her real name, police lifted a fingerprint off a holding-cell drinking glass and traced her identity to Tammy Anquinette Thomas from the Chicago area.

Since then she has refused to cooperate with repeated court-ordered psychological examinations and told a judge earlier this month "I have the right to remain silent."
