Bar-code Swapper Nets Nearly $1,400: Fridley Police Blotter

That's the value Menards said was lost to a suspected swindler.

Loss-prevention staff at Menards, 5351 Central Ave. NE, told police May 17 their investigation found that a customer has cost the store $1,385.79 by switching bar codes on items.

Here are other items selected from information provided by the Fridley Police Department:

  • A resident in the 6000 block of Woody Lane agreed to turn off music that was sending a penetrating bass sound throughout the neighborhood May 13. 
  • A Unity Hospital doctor told police a potential drug-seeking patient who was refused service and escorted off property on May 14 said he wanted the doctor's home address so he could "hunt her down."
  • A May 14 caller said someone in a neighboring apartment building in the 1400 block of 73rd Avenue NE threw an empty bottle of Corona beer and an old TV remote-control into her backyard.
  • People seen trying to uproot a small pine tree in a vacant lot in the 5400 block of Seventh Street NE on May 15 were gone when police arrived. 
  • Wal-Mart, 8450 University Ave. NE, turned over two counterfeit $50 bills to police on May 15.
  • A complainant said someone shattered the rear window of his vehicle outside the Shorewood restaurant, 6161 Hwy. 65, on May 15 and took a Bible and two leather items: a jacket and briefcase. 
  • Officers responding to a report of what sounded like a child screaming in a sewer May 15 couldn't find any problems in the 6000 block of Main Street NE. 
  • A complainant told police on May 16 a female acquaintance had returned his DVD. 
  • An open door at Grace Evangelical Free Church, 755 73rd Ave. NE, on May 16 turned out to have been left ajar by church members working on lighting for a theater production. 
  • An Osborne Way NE resident agreed May 17 to go inside and stop using a large mirror to reflect the sun at cars.
  • A complainant said someone shot out the back window of his pickup with a pellet gun during a five-minute period while it was parked in front of the office at Fridley Terrace in the 7400 block of Taylor Street NE.
  • Police received an allegation May 17 that a male had a plan to shoot a county social worker, who was advised and cancelled an appointment with the alleged suspect, who denied the allegations. Case referred to investigation division.
  • Police advised a woman selling ice cream May 17 from her vehicle at Baker Avenue and South Circle NE with an expired city vendor license that she had to stop until she renewed the license. 
  • Police cited and released a female with two minor children who had been trying to swindle the Walmart store, 8450 University Ave. NE, on May 18, using merchandise she had not bought.


In all incidents where an arrest occurred, a charge is merely an accusation, and not evidence of guilt. The arrested person is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. Incidents generally appear in the order in which they were reported, not necessarily the order in which they occurred.
