Excerpt:
A second gunshot, then a third, and Amber came tearing out the front door, slipping and skidding on the ice on the steps. Stella unlocked her door and Amber dove inside, tossing the full bags of food and water into Stella’s lap and snatching the gun out of her hand. She turned back to the house and fired six shots through the front door before pulling her door shut and holstering both guns.
Stella heaved both bags into the backseat and tore off down the road as Amber straightened out and buckled her seatbelt. “It was a fuckin’ ambush,” the girl said. Stella noted that she looked significantly older now and felt a sharp pang of sadness for her. Just a teenager and she’d probably just had to kill her family and friends. “Whatever, let’s get out of here.”

“Is there any way we can continue south without using 35? It’s completely clogged,” Stella asked after circling the block and coming back out to the main road. Amber nodded.
“Other side of 35, take a right on Forest,” she said quietly. Stella wished she could offer some comfort to the girl, but nothing she knew to do was appropriate. She pulled off to the side of the road and parked the car.
