PHOTO: Trees on East River Road Have Had Better Days

Centerpoint Energy will replace cottonwoods with maples, prairie grass.

Drivers who use East River Road will experience some interruptions in smooth-sailing traffic as Centerpoint Energy starts a project along the road next week—but nothing like what these trees just south of I-694 at experienced Thursday.

A relocated and bigger gas pipe is permitted to go where about a dozen cottonwoods stand, according to a Centerpoint spokeswoman. The utility company will replace them with maples nearby at Anoka County Park's request, she said, and also restore prairie grass in the park area.

Centerpoint starts work on its project along East River Road on Monday.
